but they did eventually let him back in the country. it was interesting
that they'd had no objection to him leaving the UK with an expired
passport, and hadn't even bothered to point it out.

and there he was thinking he might have to stay in Paris...

  3. Interesting -- I thought one could force one's way back into the
UK if one could prove citizensship, perhaps this proves it.

Apropos of which, I struck a real bitch at Immigration at Terminal
3 yesterday -- when I pointed out that I lived here, she asked, "And on
which grounds did you claim a Right to Remain?". Look, woman, it's there
in red-and-white, and AFAIK you have no power to overrule it! For added
aggravation, there's no Residents' queue at T3, so it took me 45 minutes
extra to get out of the airport. :-(

    But, questions:

    a) My passport expires in 7 months. Anyone know whether the UK imposes a
minimum lifetime on passports for incoming, especially w.r.t. people with
Indefinite Leave to Remain? (I have a similar question for Switzerland, but
since I'm usually waved through without even opening my passport, I guess
that they only want one that's currently valid.)

    b) Anyone know what the procedure is to transfer my ILtR to a new passport?
I hope it doesn't cost another £250 and another day at East Croydon!

Easiest way round this problem: get Switzerland to join the EU.

  5. They do but it varies by country region or nationality and it changes
regulary , best option would be to give them a call or e mail them for
a confirmation on the requirements specifically relating to you

  6. They are fiercely independent aren't they.

I was there on Tuesday, the hotel I stayed in wouldn't take my BarclayCard
Debit Card, but accepted my BarclayCard Business Credit Card.

    Weird.

Correct. There is no minimum validity length requirement.

YTC. There's so much wrong with that statement I don't know where to
start, so I'll list the logical and actual fallacies as they come to
    me, in no particular order.

Ivan was entering the UK, with a non-EU passport.

UK passport control treat Swiss passports the same as EU ones.

UK passport control treat an incoming flight from the EU exactly the
same as they do one from CH.

Switerland is a full member of the Schengen agreement group.

    The UK is not.

    Enough yet?

Not at all. If it was a VISA card they's accept it - other debit cards
vary in their mutual acceptance from the UK to France to Germany to
    Belgium to Swizerland.

Actually, it occurs to me that with my C permit I quite probably don't
_need_ a passport at all, as far as the Swiss authorities are
concerned. No-one seemed bothered when I 'lost'[1] my passport earlier
this year and then later when it had expired and I hadn't got round to
    renewing it yet.

[1] It was in a jacket pocket for some reason, rather than its normal
    place in my wallet.

In the case of my wife, she had to carry the old one with her to present
with the new one. I.e. the passport had expired, but the stamp remained
    valid

It's been a long time but I was told to do that the first time out and
back to get the stamp 'transferred' to my new passport.

I was also advised to carry a copy of the letter giving LtR.

Actually I still do. It may not be necessary any more, but I've
encountered enough clerks trying to make their jobs interesting to want
to avoid as many complications as possible. I just keep a copy in my
    passport.
