UK speed cameras are just for bikes

Discussion in 'UK Motorcycles' started by Paul Carmichael, Aug 1, 2009.

  1. Went to the yuk in my dago car. I was on a mission to set off every
    camera I could find.

I set off a total of zero cameras in a week's driving. I was in queues
    the whole time.

On a similar subject, I met a bloke who insisted that around 5000 British
drivers have already been fined as a result of speeding in France "since
they linked up the cameras". I told him he was a twat, but then he went
on to say stuff that suggested that perhaps he wasn't a twat. Did I miss
the thread that discussed this in detail? I've been away, you know.

the newer ones have infra red flashes so you wouldn't know that you set
them off. Also, many are now average speed jobs that read your number plate
    at various points.
AFAIK, the only circumstances where a UK driver has been sent a speeding
ticket from a French camera is where a French car hire company has grassed
them up. The hire company charges an admin fee for grassing you, to the
card used to secure the car hire. French plod, or whatever, then sends the
speeding ticket to a UK address. TOG has some experience of this and may be
able to correct errors in my recollection. I can't remember whether he paid
    the fine or ignored it.
I don't know of any circumstance where French plod have sent a speeding
ticket to the owner of a UK registered vehicle.

I believe a few colleagues have got fines through the post after
    driving in France.

I was flashed in northern France in April on the bike.
Double checked with Cab, and yes "bloke" was talking bollocks.

I was deffo flashed towards Calais a couple of years ago (it was dark
so the flash was rather visible) from the rear. I was on the bike,
unobscured number plate and GB sticker so they could have easily
    billed me but they didn't.

We were flashed two or three times on a trip across to Bergerac a few
weeks ago, and I'm fairly confident that we'll hear nothing, as they
were all relatively minor ones, IYSWIM. I did wonder if a big speed,
like maybe the flat-out 155mph, might make them think twice.

I do know that the Swiss-France agreement is being used the other way
round, in that a friend and colleague of mine has recently been chased
by Swiss plod for several offences in his french-registered cars. Was
banned for a month in CH as a result.

Given the French beaurocracy, I expect it to take them a bit longer to
get it sorted, but I think it will happen eventually.

  9. What I meant was I never got above the speed limit because of queues.
This happened to me last time I hired a car in the yuk. GBP34.50. Hertz
    have lost a regular customer.

Might not take too long as they have an agreement in place with Belgium.
A colleague found this out last week, when he got a ticket for speeding
in his on car in France.

Don't expect the rest to do any different, though that does seem a bit
pricey. I'm sure Avis only charged about a tenner when it happened to me
    in Italy.

I had what looked like an unmarked car pull alongside me on the coast
road to France when I was doing a tad over 130km/h

They took a photo of my wife in the passenger seat and then sped off

How would the French authorities have got your address?

They obviously didn't get my address which is why they didn't bill me.

Obviously. But you said "they could have easily billed me". I was
asking how *you* thought they might find out where to send the bill
    to.

  18. They all might do it, but Hertz did it to me. I can't do business with a
company that has blatantly robbed me and given my credit card address to
someone without my permission ie; brit plod.

  19. Which country gets the cash and who enforces it?

Doesn't a "crime" have to have some sort of notifiable status before it
    can be pursued internationally?

  20. How did they get into your passenger seat? And where was your wife? On
    the bonnet?
