We don't have National Identity cards as yet... or do we?
We have photo-licenses (which are pointless, as you can't use it for
anything official; you have to produce the paper 'counterpart' licence
anyway), we have passports of course, we have any number of 'official'
cards. We have more CCTV cameras than any other nation.
Essentially the buggers have got us monitored from cradle to grave.

I think the problem as outlined by Geoff and Bill is that to arrange
insurance (which has to be a minimum of Third-Party risks for legal
compliance) you have to be able to meet certain criteria; you need to
have a UK address and you have to hold a UK driving licence for the
class of vehicle to be ridden/driven.
That said, I think Scotty managed it somehow as he gave my address
when he first arrived in UK - not sure how he swung the licence
criteria - I'll ask him soon as he is finished touring the tea-rooms
and bookshops of Derbyshire with Jimmy!
There again, he was also riding a NSW registered vehicle, which raised
a few eyebrows in it's own right...

If it is of any assistance to Clive I would be prepared to allow use
of my address if it would assist, although I think we had to insure
the bike in my name and have them (Geoff and Bill) individually listed
    as named riders.

The only thing I can no longer offer is a room at the Northernmost
Bastion of Aus.Moto, as the fambly now fills all spaces! (Except for
Johno - there's a hammock we can put up in the garden with a gravity
fed tank of ale for him...)

    Cheers,

    Jeffles

Ah, yes. I remember that now.

Naturally, I can't remember what mine was. :-(

.....and my drivers licence was back before the computer system, and has
long been lost in the mists of antiquity.

Thanks, Bill and Jeffles. BTW, don't panic, I ain't planning any moves
    back to UK.

Mate of mine found it was cheaper to rent a middleweight (In his case
a GT550 Kwak but this was a while ago) than to transport his own or
    buy there.

He rented it for I think about 5 weeks including the Isle of Man and a
    trip to Italy.
