You should have thought of that before you decided to breed.

The root of the problem is unaccountable taxation. Most people up here were
just amazed by the situation, never realising that it could exist until this
    bit of publicity.

Do I recall that there is already legislation covering empty houses in needy
areas? If not it is all that is really needed. Let the market sort it out
with some light touch legislation (usually the best plan). Force local
councils in London to reduce rent allowance to the same as other parts of
the country. So about £900 for a 3 bed house, £400 for a one bed flat.
Landlords will either take the pain, sell if they can, or find private
tenents or use bankrupcy. Lenders will have to sell at a price relative to
    available rental incomes.

Looking at a lot of the houses in question I doubt there is a 3 mile queue
of people waiting to pay substantial private rents or buy them for top
dollar, so this would be a good time to sort it all out.

They're unlikely to be trying to save 50k to buy a house.

No, but I was the kinda-step-parent faced with it a few years ago & I
told the mother she should tell them to **** off. She didn't, & ended
up bankrupt as a direct result.

I was the kid once too. My parents stuck me in an old caravan in the
    field. It was good enough.

I should have just lost again #2, back for a few weeks between rental
flat ending and bought one started. She's not a problem but it will be
nice to get her gear and pets out of the house again.

    Accommodating daughters' cat called Biscuit.

You call the cat and our dog would immediately come and sit obediently
    in front of you.
