That'd be one of those major cities with a million or so vacancies
paying something like the national average wage? How many vacancies
are there in Derby for newly qualified teachers? I'm just using the
town and the job as examples but ykwim.

They can move to somewhere like Bedford and commute every day but
that'd cost them somewhere around a grand a month in tickets & parking
so it's still a pretty expensive game and houses are still pretty
    expensive.

I'm guessing they don't have a deposit, our a lousy credit rating.

Oddly Bedford is *way* cheaper than somewhere like (to pick an example
    at random) Harlow.

I'll bet it's a lot younger. I bought my first flat in 1984 age 24. At
37 you've only just got time to pay off the mortgage before you retire.

Yeah, I pass several of Berkshire's Millenium Domes on my way to work.

IKWYM. I always feel a bit "soiled" if I read something by GM that I
    agree with.

There are some policies that only pay out for a year, and some that
only kick-in *after* a year. Or there were, anyway.

    That's not a commute, that's purgatory.
That'd be no more than 350-400 in the areas we've been looking at.

It'd be comfortably over half a lumpy one round here, mind.
Must be all those derelict docks and Minellium Domes.

Bought my first house at 26 after convincing the building society to
give me 5.5x salary, & moved straight into the garage so I could rent
the bedrooms out to pay the bills.

Nah mate, that's a weasel. If I had an aardvark for every time that
mistake gets made I'd have a marmoset[1] and no mistake.

IOD to City - 09:30 - 09:55 kitchen to desk, £30 in unleaded pcm.
Less than a service interval per year.
Bike and insurance would exist anyway.

If I worked in Canary Wharf, it'd be £1 e/w and <10 minutes on the
    bus.

Sure, and I don't know the answer.. but surely the approach would need
to be the other way round anyhow, find jobs then move.
we need a 'The rent is too damn high' party.

19, after getting an interest free loan for the 3K to cover an 8%
deposit from my employer that wanted me to relocate. £180 a month
mortgage was about 1/3 cheaper than renting at the time. I think it
was just over 2x salary they loaned me.

    How times have changed
