Quite. I imagine they would have no difficulty finding jobs elsewhere
    in the country and moving.

A single parent living where they do and on a low income, however,
would find a similar undertaking almost impossible.

not sure where you got this time from, thetrainline.com gives every
    train being under an hour.
most of the quick trains stop at Bedford too [1]. its 40 mins on a
quick train from here. admittedly on the 7.45 you're lucky to get a
    seat.

    Bedford to StP 7.55 - 08.38, 43 mins.

the issue is often not how long it gets to London, its where in London
you have to get to. often took me longer to get to Hammersmith after I
got into StP than it did to get there in the first place. add that
onto the hour and a half and it isn't a sensible every day commute.

[1] yep this one stops at 7.44, 51 minutes to London

    Or just moving & commuting.
Indeed, but you wouldn't expect a single parent on a low income to buy
    their own house.

That's the problem atm - you need fifty grand or so as a deposit to buy
a flat in London, which is a significant lump sum to acquire when you're
    also paying rent.

Which they could save in a year if they wanted to by renting in a
shithole at the end of a tube line. It took me two years of renting in
one of the biggest shitholes on the planet (Thamesmead) to save a
    deposit, so I've BTDTGTTS.

No. I was thinking more back to WUN's OP. In general there are plenty
of people for whom it is difficult to find any sympathy, in terms of
what they perceive will be "a struggle" to be able to afford to live
    where they do.

There are many others, however, who would find the task of finding
somewhere cheaper to live and then moving there near enough
impossible. They are the same ones likely to struggle the most if they
    don't move.

indeed. They even let horses run around in the middle of the ring road
    - fucking pikeys.

I wouldn't know, one way or the other.

I'd suggest that would be very few rather than 'many'. Probably only
people who work & rely on nearby friends/relatives to look after their
kids during the day, & who are already living in the cheapest available
accomodation in their area, & who have a complete **** for a landlord
who won't drop the rent by the tiny amount someone in that situation's
    likely to lose out by.

In those cases it's possible the council will make an exception anyway,
& if not, they still legally have to house them one way or another.

It's not all doom & gloom though, people who need overnight care
(probably the absolute worst off) will be able to get extra benefits
for a room for their carer to sleep in. That is a very good thing imo,
& if it means some people in central London boroughs have to move half
a mile down the road, or make their kids share a room to fund it, so be
    it.

If I wanted to live on a boat, I might be tempted.

Actually, I might want to live on a boat, but I'd have something more
    like the QE2 in mind.

Didn't really help that they built the M11 in the wrong place.

There are some really nice bits[1] on the outskirts, but I really doubt
I'd buy one of the nice houses, even if I could afford it, simply
    because it's, well Harlow.

    [1] Well one nice bit.

well, you knew where I meant...

what does Harlow really have for a ring road - the 414?

    All over, I assume :)

I always thought that was some kind of throwback to feudal grazing rights.

I must admit, I do quite like going for a run and seeing people riding
    horses.
    Nothing.

A414 does two sides, then some other roads do two more.
