  2. Florida west coast with moorings and as much oil as you can scoop up.

The prices are coming down so much vendors are including their
    yacht/boat in with the price.

  4. They earn 80k a year between them so if they spend nothing and she
prostitutes herself out for rent and food then it's possible.

Would you buy a house that sleeps 7 with 3 bedrooms?

there was a Canuck comedian Pete Johansen on the R Howard show this week.
He has a modest proposal too.

I watched the long version of the show on tonight so his act may be edited
more for the regular show repeated next week

his whole set was quite funny with a good series of fart gags

I forgot that couples saving for a house deposit didn't pay tax.

Not only that, but certainly the train services from down this neck of
the woods into Central London are pretty oversubscribed at peak times
as it is (1), to the point they were seriously considering extending
the platforms at some of the stations not so long ago so they could
run trains with more carriages than at present.

    (1) I'm not factoring in the relatively new high speed service in this
    - I believe that has plenty of seats available due to the high cost /
ending up at a terminus that is no good to the majority that commute
    into London.

80k gross between two is about 59k net.

So it's theoretically possible, but practically extremely unlikely.

Two years, otoh, would be quite do-able.

  12. With my proposed approach above they could do it in a year with 9k to
    spare.

You're not being creative enough. They could probably both sell a
kidney and do it in weeks.

9k would barely cover rent, council tax, water and heating for a bedsit
in a shitty part of town. I'm not sure "spare" is quite the right word

Not an average couple, but a couple on 80k certainly could if they
    really wanted to.

    It's already been said that 80k a year is <60k nett. I suppose a
couple could live on £750/month, which would have to include rent,
council tax, gas, electricity, food, transport.

It would be a really grim fucking existence, even if they could, which
    I doubt.

If you mean 80k gross, their income would be 53k if one of them is
making 80k, and 59k if they each make 40k. Take council tax and rent
out of 59k and there isn't much left.

'If they really wanted to' means making sacrifices, like moving back in
with parents for a while or renting a room out, & getting
evening/weekend jobs, & reading books (rather than watching TV) whilst
wearing 3 jumpers to save gas & electric, & living on jacket spuds with
Asda value beans etc etc. Sure it might be a bit grim, but a year's
    nothing.

I think that once you add up all the things going against anyone
trying to save that sort of cash you realise it just isn't going to
happen. Successive governments have ensured that no graduate is going
to start work without a large burden of debt you need to include those
payments into your £750/month budget alongside those run of the mill
    things like food and rent.
