Bought the DVD box set of 'Band of Brothers' last year, but never got round
to watching it. Dedicated this weekend to do exactly that (bar a bike show
in Utrecht). Am quiote impressed with it so far. Only got 3 episodes to
watch from the 12, but the 9th one was very impressive. That's the one where
they discovered the camps. Not a gun-shot in the whole episode.

The series starts of very americanesque, but stay with it. It is well worth
    it.

    I don't like germans.

I preferred Ultraviolet from a few years ago. I've got the DVD
    somewhere.

I still have the original 10 hour miniseries on video - recorded in the
80s (on the second showing to the best of my (fading) memory.) Last
time I checked the quality was still reasonable. Also have the 19
episode tv series that came after it, all purchased early 90s and still
as cheesy as when first made.

I have a copy from when it was first on during the LA olympics,
complete with the lovely continuity announcer Anglia had at the time,
as well as kosher vids. The follow-on series was ok until the
    delicious Michael Ironside left.

Actually I loved that, but they were re-running it on Gold or somesuch.
Nothing like as good as I recall.

I found the same with 'Last Train'

It got repeated on one of the Sky channels a week or
two back - it was fantastic to see some of that again!

I was impressed enough with the series to buy David Kenyon Webster's
book Parachute Infantry; a very good read.

Webster appears in the series in two places: the 'chocolate' scene in
Holland, and the episode in Hagenau.

On D-Day, Webster was 18th in a stick of 20 in his C-47. When he got
to the aircraft door, he froze....all he could see below was water.
Nevertheless he jumped, but the plane was far too low for him to get
rid of his gear and parachute before hitting the water.....it was
three feet deep. He was lucky, many of the airborne troops drowned in
    the flooded fields.

I've seen a map showing the dropping points of the aircraft, and have
narrowed it down to three that he could have been in. Without further
info, I can't get it any finer than that.

When he landed, he could hear a chuch bell tolling in the distance. It
almost certainly was the church at Ste Mere Eglise, where Pvt John
Steele's parachute had caught on the spire, and he had the unenviable
view of his comrades landing below him in a square full of armed
Germans - the scene was graphically depicted in the film The Longest
    Day.
I've been bombed, rocketed, and cruise-missiled by the Germans. Why
    don't you like them?
