Those that thought Star Trek was a good film would be advised to stop here. John Woo goes back to his roots. If you like martial in your martial arts, big set piece battles, tortoises and firebombs, this one is for you. Original language Chinese, so subtitled into English, the story of two little guys ganging up on a big bully. Ok, so they had a few hundred thousand men between them, but that's not the point. Set in 180 AD it depicts the war between Cao Cao, Prime Minister (Grand Visier) of the Han Dynasty who takes exception to Liu Bei and Sun Quan, our heroes down south. Filmed in China, great scenary, lots of extras getting speared, arrowed, burnt, drowned and generally hacked. It's all a bit stereotypical, with slanty eyed blokes staring into the distance talking about the Crane manouvre, but all in all, jolly good fun. Fenghy Zhang is a sort of Chinese Brian Blessed who pushes horses over! Ah, just remembered, it might also help if you *haven't* read Interesting Times...
