Those that thought Star Trek was a good film would be advised to stop here.

John Woo goes back to his roots. If you like martial in your martial
arts, big set piece battles, tortoises and firebombs, this one is for
you. Original language Chinese, so subtitled into English, the story of
two little guys ganging up on a big bully. Ok, so they had a few
hundred thousand men between them, but that's not the point. Set in 180
AD it depicts the war between Cao Cao, Prime Minister (Grand Visier) of
the Han Dynasty who takes exception to Liu Bei and Sun Quan, our heroes
    down south.

Filmed in China, great scenary, lots of extras getting speared, arrowed,
burnt, drowned and generally hacked. It's all a bit stereotypical, with
slanty eyed blokes staring into the distance talking about the Crane
manouvre, but all in all, jolly good fun. Fenghy Zhang is a sort of
Chinese Brian Blessed who pushes horses over!

Ah, just remembered, it might also help if you *haven't* read
    Interesting Times...

I want to see that so let me know if it's any good.

This is the film about the fucked up attempt by Germans which ended
with them all brown bread isn't it?

Blimey, I admire your faith in humanity. I've heard it described as a
*great* film. I left after matey boy (Montgomery Scott?) got beamed
into the bubble bath and went down the pub.

It was an unadulterated pile of narcissic crap, that despite it's
juvenile attempts at humour, failed to even have the saving grace of
    being funny.

We watched it a week ago on DVD. Gripping stuff, but SWMBO was muttering
about historical accuracy. Needless to say, in view of the outcome
nobody knows for certain exactly what happened, except for the final
rescue attempt (not a spoiler as you and Nige already know the outcome).

I then read the chapter in "The White Spider" covering this attempt
which she had out of the library. Heinrich Harrer's account does at
least agree pretty well with the details of the climbing.

    Well worth watching though.

Is there a bloke with a beard and a camcorder in your cave with you? There
could be a few quid in it for you.
Kirk, but not Shatner. It's one of them all-new casts[1] set before the
adventures seen in the TV series type affairs.

[1] Except for Nimoy, who muscled his way in.

With William Shatner? I can't quite work out which would be worst -
with him (assuming he's still alive) or with someone else taking his
    part.

When I first went to the Alps the North face of the Eiger was one I
really wanted to do and I went to Grindlewald to have a go but the
weather was crap. It was always 'the big one' but I suppose that
climbing equipment has improved over the years and the older you get
the better you were so I can just sit back and claim I probably could
    have done it.

I've been up the Eiger and I've peered out from the viewing point (1)
at the face so I know it really isn't that technical but back then
when nobody had done it and the kit was fucking shite those guys had
    massive bollocks to try.

My views on assisted climbs are well documented and the real heroes
were the likes of Harrer and Walter Bonatti who just went out there
and did what nobody else could at the time.
