Even if you *love* sci-fi and aliens and stuff, just *DON'T* On the plus side, it was only 90 minutes long. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
We had a narrow escape yesterday. The trailer made it look pretty good so we had planned to go last night. Just out of curiosity I checked a couple of review sites and changed our mind. I'll wait till it's available for download.
That was what trapped us. No really, don't. Forget it ever happened. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
Is this on par with District 9 and Cloverfield or is it really, truly dreadful? -- Veggie Dave http://www.iq18films.co.uk "To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin." Cardinal Bellarmine
I thought District 9 was ok and quite liked Cloverfield. I really liked some of the films you recommended to me as well, so I don't know what that says about my taste in films. Maybe I just like films. Recent switch offs included Rain Fall, Southland Tales, and Broken Embraces. Recent highlights Macgruber (you need to be drunk), 'House of Sand and Fog' and The Informant - which we really did like.
I know a lot of people didn't like either of these films, but I quite enjoyed them (although the first 15 mins of Cloverfield was painfully bad), so I was wondering if Skyline was the same sort of thing (and, therefore, probably worth checking out) or if it was just unarguably shite. -- Veggie Dave http://www.iq18films.co.uk "To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin." I rather liked District 9, and Cloverfield was good I thought. But I saw Skyline last night and was bored throughout, with several moments where I heard myself going 'pfft'. I thought it ripped off loads of Independence day (cf. Will Smith punching an alien unconscious), and also the sentinels in the later Matrix films. And the actors were crap. The lead actor is so ugly he would be lucky to get a role as an extra!
To give you some kind of basis, I quite liked District 9 (although I wouldn't watch it again) and thing Cloverfield was OK. Ish. If I had to watch one, it would be either of those before I chewed my own leg off, before watching Skyline again. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
It's more Cloverfield than anything else I've seen, but it misses all the good bits. -- Catman MIB#14 SKoGA#6 TEAR#4 BOTAFOF#38 Apostle#21 COSOC#3 Tyger, Tyger Burning Bright (Remove rust to reply) 116 Giulietta 3.0l Sprint 1.7 GTV TS GT 3.2 V6 Triumph Sprint ST 1050: It's blue, see. www.cuore-sportivo.co.uk
Ah, bugger. Another film off the list then... -- Veggie Dave http://www.iq18films.co.uk "To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin." Cardinal Bellarmine

This is a LA Times puff piece on the film makers: http://tinyurl.com/23vb4v3 You don't even have to read between the lines to see how bad it is. "The dialogue ... is unlikely to attract much critical praise. Typical lines include “Oh my God!” “I can’t believe this!” “It just doesn’t seem real!” “Oh my God, oh my God!” and “Like it or not, this is happening!” The brothers initially considered improvising “Skyline’s” dialogue and making the film for $50,000. But after they shot a teaser trailer less than a year ago to spark some early pre-sales (well before “Skyline” was made), their ambitions grew. They didn’t have the money to pay their crew of about 20 people, raising the funds through loans and investors. What’s more, they had to sell skeptical actors and agents on the project, where the compensation was deferred. “It wasn’t easy,” Greg says. “We were telling everybody, ‘You’re going to make zero. And we’ve never done this before.’ ” When shooting at Greg’s apartment complex garage, they would have to stop between takes so the parking attendant could retrieve residents’ cars."
Me too - mind you, I gave it five minutes before the camera "work" put me off. A couple of large skips forward to check if it got better revealed that it was just more of the same, so it went the way of all things.
The first 15 minutes are absolutely shite, but once you get out of the 'party' section it does get better as the camera becomes a little steadier and how it's shot makes a bit more sense. If you just skipped chapters, though, you wouldn't get pulled in by what little story there is so it wouldn't appear to get any better. I'm not saying it's a masterpiece, but those first 15 mins and the rest of the film are chalk and cheese. -- Veggie Dave http://www.iq18films.co.uk "To assert that the earth revolves around the sun is as erroneous as to claim that Jesus was not born of a virgin."
