I watched a small budget "thinking" film this weekend called 'Primer'.
It's of the same sort of stuff as Donnie Darko, Memento, Mulholland Drive
    etc.

It's grainy and the audio sometimes makes it difficult to hear the
dialogue which helps aid the confusion at the start. As the film
progresses you get to hear more of the conversations that are going on,
but it doesn't necessarily clarify WTF is going on.

Highly recommended if you like films of that kind.

Grainy picture, poor sound and confusing plot... can't wait.

Be fair, Memento was rather good, but Donnie Darko was bad enough to tip
    the balance.

I somehow knew you wouldn't have liked those films.

MD's a bag of old bollocks. It was originally meant to be the pilot for a
tv series, iirc, but then Lynch rejigged it to be a film. Much like DD, it
makes bugger all sense unless you've had it explained.

The genius of Memento is that all *is* explained, sort of, but backwards.
DD and MD fail entirely on the basis that they're not self-contained
entities (DD in particular, since it only makes any sense at all if you've
    read the surrounding material. Wank.)

    Well, let's see:

Donnie Darko - stupid, but the kids like it.
Memento - actually, this is OK
Mulholland Drive - haven't actually seen it, but that would have
    spoiled my original trite comment

To come from another angle, films I've seen and enjoyed recently
    include:

    Code 46
    Goodbye Lenin!
    Gosford Park
    Girl with a Pearl Earring
    Requiem for a Dream
    Sideways
    Vera Drake
    Versus

the amputation scene's a little unpleasant.
Really? MDB looked like nonsense to me - you're the first person who's
    mentioned they liked it.
Oh, Closer - I'd forgotten about that - yes, highly recommended.

Hotel Rwanda's on my Amazon rental list at the moment. I enjoyed The
Cube; Cube 2 not so much. Haven't seen Zero yet.

Others I'd forgotten in the other post:

    A Room for Romeo Brass
    To Honor and Obey
    Cypher

I'll stick to flicking the books[1] quickly then.

    [1] which are jolly good.

I'd have to watch Primer once more to see if it's self-contained or not.
Knowing the end of the film, I think back to parts at the beginning and
can't remember if the end explains it, or prompts more questions.

Fair point... you wouldn't want minor details like that getting in the way
    of a nice trite comment.

The cube is a top film. Cube 2 is a little silly really with the changing
    gravity direction.

Reminds me of the scene where the lasers cut the guy to pieces in (1)
    resident evil.

    (1) I think that's the film

Hotel Rwanda's excellent. Cube Zero's pretty much what you'd expect...

  16. Not seen Hotel Rwanda yet.

One to miss - House of Wax. I also watched Troy the other day, what a
pile of crap that was. Maybe I'm missing something but I don't seem to
have got a decent film out on rental for ages.

Not a film but bloody hilarious, BBC Three - Funland. Finished now but
they'll probably repeat it soon. We've just finished watching the whole
series over the weekend and it was excellent.

    Agree on both counts.
I watched Convicted (aka Return to Sender) last night - not bad. The
trick these days seems to be to avoid anything with a big special
    effects budget.

Well, FWIW Donny Darko was something I watched once whilst distracted
and a second time when half paying attention. I found it thought
provoking ish the first time but had been doing other stuff whilst
watching it. I don't think I'll necessarily watch it again in a hurry
but wouldn't classify it as shit.
