The Dan Walsh thread drifting reminds me that, last weekend, we booked
flights to Rhodes in a spur of the moment fashion but have no idea of
where on the island we should stay.

With two young(ish) kids, it would be useful to be near some kids
activities and stay out of any party resorts.

    What suggests the font?

I spent two weeks in Rhodes a couple of years back, staying at a rather
smart five star all-inclusive resort a few miles south of Rhodes town
    (and nowhere near Faliraki).

The highlight of our two weeks in Rhodes was the day trip to Turkey.
That told me all I needed to know about Rhodes - less good than
    Marmaris, ffs.

If you really must go there, the place we stayed was alright but the
island itself isn't much to shout about and Rhodes town is only bearable
after sundown when the shops have closed up and you can see the place
    without the tourist tat everywhere.

If it were not for the kids I'd suggest getting straight onto the ferry
to Symi. Symi is lovely but probably not much for kids to do. Try
    googling it.

Symi is gorgeous, just to sit and chill.

There was me thinking someone was going to make a crack about Dangerous
    Rhodes.

For about an hour. And then get on the ferry back.

We spent two weeks there a few years ago, travelling with Laskarini. We
did lots and lots of walking, being dropped off by truck at the start and
met by boat for lunch, swimming and the ride back. Came back as fit as a
butcher's dog, tired but very, very happy. The shops had two price
structures: rip-off for the day-trippers and reasonable for residents
before the first boat arrived and after the last one left. Best to get
away from the harbour area while the day-trippers were there, we found.

Unless you're near Rhodes town itself, it's all pretty barren

And in Turkey Marmaris is considered to be a bit on the shit end of
destinations to pick from. So how bad is Rhodes?

That's pretty much the point I was making, yes.
