Right then you lot, I'm a pretty keen wine drinker, but generally only
have experience of New World stuff and Rioja, which seems to form the
bulk of what gets recommended on here. The problem is that I've
recently developed a taste for red burgundy, and fantastic stuff it is
too, but the stuff I've found good is seriously stretching my wallet
    <gazes at half-empty bottle of Mercurey>.

So, anyone have any recommendations for sub-tenner bottles?

  2. Almost anything from Bodegas Torres in the Penedes region of Cataluña.
Domenec will second this any minute now. :) Try the Gran Coronas, it is
    stunning.

If you can find a Farnese (Wop) they are also fine.

Oh christ, I've no idea what UK prices are like, but I've got a
cellarfull of Burgundies and Rhones downstairs. The latter have seemed
to be more to my taste in recent years, and I'd heartily recommend any
Cornas or Lirac if you could find them. St. Aubin is pretty damned
fine too. Then again, the ones downstairs cost a fair bit more than a
tenner over here, so are probably out of your range in the UK. But
there may be cheaper producers as well.

Mercurey can be a splendid wine too, particularly, IIRC, the 1998.
I've got a couple of bottles of 2002, which was only about a fiver,
    but isn't half as good.

I did recently manage to score some very drinkable Haut Cotes do
Beaune for only around six euros a bottle, but only about a dozen
bottles, all of which have now been consumed. Cotes do Nuits is
another one from around the Dijon area which can be very good.

This isn't really helping, is it?

Haha. Luckily I had already steeled myself for information on what I
should be drinking if I lived on the continent / lived in France / was
    fucking Louis Latour's daughter :)

Who made the mercurey-for-a-fiver you've got?

    Cheers

TBH I'm only guessing at the price, but there are two "wine clubs"
whose products are often found on supermarket shelves, the "Club des
Sommelliers" and the, err, "Expert Club". They tend to be good, but
moderately priced examples of the wine, but . The Mercurey is from the
former, and was pretty good value. Generally Mercurey tends to retail
from about 8 euros upward around here, so I'd be fairly sure it was
only that sort of level or less.

Oh bugger, you've done it now, and I was just about to go to bed too.
So this one <slurp> is bottled by <gargle> Paul Reitz, 21700
Corgolain, Cote d'Or. Not much of a nose, it seems[1], but it's
well-structured on the palate, with fairly mellow tannins giving way
to a soft fruitiness <glug> and a long dry finish <hic>.

    Nice, anyway.

[1] But it's just up from the cellar and freshly opened, so that will
probably change in a few minutes.

Bingo. TVM - there's a Majestic up the road from me, but I hadn't
bothered with is for some reason. The supermarkets here are shit
    Burgundy-wise,

Yeah, it's the Pinot I'm after. Don't really understand why people drnk
Beaujolais. I'll look up what Laithwaites have to offer in that case
too, might save me the bother of carrying a case the mile from Majestic
    :)

You're not wrong. One of these days I'll have to get round to popping
down there and doing the whole tasting at the Vineyard thang. No
excuse. really - it's only a couple of hours away, but I've only ever
been there on the bike, which kinda limits things.
I don't seem to have any at the mo, to do a tasting, but it's one of
the slurping wines I tend to drink a lot of, at less than five EU a
bottle. Jolly pleasant it can be too. I take your point about it being
different from the 'classical' burgundies, but I think there's just as
much variation between the 100% pinot noir products anyway.
Sorry, I'm only telling it like it is. I'll have a look at your links,
then, if you think it'll give me a laugh.

BTW this Mercurey's definitely improved for having been open ten
    minutes now...

OK, done that now. Actually they look to have a decent selection and
the prices aren't too bad. As long as you think in Euros instead of
    pounds.

But I think you've found what Tim was looking for - some decent wines
    in that list.

  9. Mercurey is about as cheap as decent red Burgundy gets. Rully (I may have
spelled that wrong) is another, most is white but there is some red.
There's another Cote Chalonnaise (I've almost certainly spelt that wrong)
village which is decent too but I can't remember the name. Then you get
into Macon which is variable. Then the Cote d'Or which is expensive. And
    still variable.

    Burgundy is:

    Expensive;
    A minefield;
    Bloody brilliant when it's right.

    (1) and (3) don't always match. I've tried Burgundies at 100 quid or so
which weren't great. And 20 quid ones which were.

You'll be lucky to get any sort of decent Burgundy for under a tenner.
There's a few at just over that. I recommend
http://www.butlers-winecellar.co.uk/ . In Brighton, but does mail order.
Call him and tell him your requirements, what you like and so on, he's
very good at that sort of thing.

    Regards, Ian

  16. Here's another non-Burgundy -- I'm just about to get my second glass:

Bushland Reserve Shiraz 2003, £3.99 at Aldi.

Very heavy wine (13.5% with some of the character of port) but
easy enough on the palate. I'll be trying their 2005 Chardonnay later, if
this doesn't put me to sleep first.
