Trying to book tickets for Take That for Anya's Christmas present so I
decide to use the NEC website rather than sit on the phone all
    morning.

At 8.59am the website was fine. At 9am it crashed.

You'd think the NEC would have realised the impact selling these
tickets online would have and made sure their website was up to it.

Some techie needs a real kicking.

Having "been there" it's really not as simple as you might think.

A lot depends on the system they're using - not all can handle just adding
    another server.
It also depends on the infrastructure, their budget and a whole lot of other
    things.

Finally, sometimes you just CAN'T cater for all the people who suddenly
decide they want to use that site at that time - it's pretty much a DOS -
    but not malicious.

So yes, maybe a techie does need a kicking, but I suspect there was a techie
somewhere telling his manager something had to be done and being ignored...

Of which I'm fully aware given the clients my company has. We;ve got
sites that are under a lot more load than that in bursts and handle it
    fine.
Oh, undoubtably it will be penny pinching. Their phone lines went
    down as well.

Thankfully Ticketmaster have invested in their web infrastructure
properly and were able to sell me some tickets to the Manchester gig.

  9. Who isn't in the regurgitated^H^Hreformed Take That[1].

    Phil.

[1] Please do - I'm sure that 2 barrels-worth of buckshot would imporve
    their 'songs' immensely.

Er, it wasn't the fact you were after Take That tickets (one of my
friends actually crewed that tour), it was the fact this thread just
appeared on Pipex's servers, dated today, a post which I hope was
actually made a good few years ago

To be honest, I couldn't give a shit about Take That or Robbie
Williams but my wife wanted to go being a long time fan.

It just amazes me that even now people can't run ecommerce or
telephone sales setups that can cope with large volumes of people that
they _know_ are going use to the service.

  14. Indeed. It's not like it's rocket science - even *I* have run
    high-volume ecommerce websites!

I bought my daughter Caz tickets to see Take That for her 13th birthday.
That was over 11 years ago. She's grown up since then.

No, not me. Mrs WUN wants the CD for Chrimbo, mind. I was just amused by
Ben's blatant "It's for the missus" line.

    Which one's your favourite, Ben?

Anya went to every concert last time around.

I can understand the desire to go to the reunion gig, after all I went
to both Motley Crue and Black Sabbath's reunion tours.
