    hello darlings!

if i bought 3 chests of drawers from a company offering less than
half-price today (i.e. until midnight), would anyone be able to get them
to Charente Maritime? said company only delivers to mainland Britain,
and they are very lovely bits of wood:

offer in exchange: accommodation in 4-bedroom stone house in small
hamlet surrounded by vineyards and fields with lovely little restaurants
nearby, and only an hour from Bordeaux.

They're not exactly small are they
Hmmm, how soon would you want them delivering and if we all tied a
small part of the drawers on our bikes could we have a party there?

I can get them across the channel (eventually) to Normandy, but it might
take a while. I can store them in a garage just off the A34, so on the
Portmouth or Poole ferry route. They appear to be delivered boxed so
should stay clean. Perhaps Mr. Fisher might be able to get them a bit
    closer to you.

but you can have a party here anyway :)

i'm not in a hurry for them, but can't afford the normal prices so
ordering has to be done before midnight. need a delivery address :)

i could collect from Normandy one at a time, or maybe Tuppy could
routierly sneak them down the 137 which passes 10 miles from here.

Might manage it if they were flat-pack, but the Mazda 6 Estate is
usually already loaded to the gunwales on every trip. We transported all
the really bulky items when I still had the CRV.

    Depending how big they are....

I'm planning a little wander down through Europe via Millau, Cote D
Azur, Misano, Stelvio, Nurburgring and home in the first week in
    october.

If you know the flatpack sizes I'll check what can be squeeshed into
the back of the Mini Herse, Pvt. Wilson lives spitting distance from
    me.

    In communiqué
In fact, depending on the news from Point de Corde, I might be doing a
solo run (the others flying out to meet me later) with the Voxan on the
trailer in late October. Might be able to get both in with the back seat
    folded down completely.

Simon is a bit off my route to the tunnel, but I would be taking a
latish train anyway. That would get them to Limoges.

Won't know if this an option until early October though.

    price.
dunno what it's like all the way over in the east, but round here it's
big money, and i don't need enough to buy it online.

ding. Pretty much everything in the diy world is much (usually 2x) more
expensive in France. I've yet to find anything cheaper there than here.

that's not so far from St Dizant, and if you were passing Angoulême
(Châteauneuf) there is someone who could deliver from there.
    no hurry.

Oh. Can't say I'd have known how much it was in the UK. We have bought
quite a lot in Germany, where there's a big DIY chain called Hornbach
which we prefer for some stuff to many of the French ones, although of
course we use one of the two local ones in the Village whenever
    possible.

Really? Dunno where you're looking, or for what, but that certainly
has not been our experience. You need to go to the right sort of
place, though, so don't buy building materials from a Bricolage shop,
    for example.

Some of the Bricos round here do tend to cater for a very rural
market, heavy on "motoculture", so clearly not the best for decorating
stuff, but I think it's just a case of knowing where's best for what,
rather than expecting them all to be good and cheap for everything.

Aaah, I begin to see why you folks think it's expensive. I don't even
try and work out how much stuff is in Sterling, and if I do ever think
about it I'd tend to think in terms of 1.6 Eu to the pound, which is
about what it was when we moved here (although in FFr, but YKWIM).

At current rates of exchange, from the UK, yes, it's all very
expensive. As it happens the Swiss Franc is riding high at the moment,
so any conversions I do, to/from the currency I'm paid in, makes
France seem even better value than normal, despite its higher VAT
    rates.

I was shocked in Bricomarche in Orthez when I went to get a detail
sander (B&D mouse type thing) for sis-in-laws windows.

    Prices *starting* from €60!

Needless to say, windows remained un-done.

I've seen cheap chinese-made ones around here for around a tenner. The
key thing is to buy stuff when you see it on offer in a supermarket.
Going to a brico when you _need_ something will not find you the
    bargains.
