Well I am doing all sorts of things to my bike. If you haven't been witness
to this saga...I am the original owner of a 1980 CX-500 custom.

While doing maintainence I removed the air filter looking for the spare key
I keep in there. I peered inside this chamber and noticed about, ( i am
guessing) 1/4 inch of fluid in this chamber...I couldn't tell if it was oil
or gas....why would this be happening....drain tubes plugged?

I may completely off base in this response, but I once owned a 1978 CX500.
If my memory serves me well (it doesn't) there are several tubes that hang
down in front of the rear wheel with plugs in the ends. I don't know why
the plugs are there, perhaps to contain potential pollution, but I think
they're supposed to be removed periodically to allow whatever they plug to
drain. Look for an owner's manual if you don't have one.

Plugs are there because otherwise air would get sucked into the intake of
the engine that didn't go through the air filter.

Looks of good CX/GL 500/650 stuff out there:

Lots of play by play mechanical fixes:

Well, you absolutely right. I unplugged tose babys and all kinds of crap
came out and still continued to come out. Who knows if this could have been
a problem that affected engine performance...that's why there was so much
stuff in the air filter box becasue it had been a while since I last drained
    it......Thanks mate!
