I will be picking up the 400/4 from Luton tomorrow, planned route
    WSM - M5 - M4 - M25 - A1 - Luton + return

Does anything need moving within reasonable range of the above ?.

gurgled happily, sounding much like they were
    saying:
No idea, but you'll get to Luton a damn sight easier up the M1 than the
    A1.

Too much time to think, too little to do.

Talk about the long way round... Alternatively - M4, A404, Wycombe,
    Chesham, Berkhamsted, Dunstable, Luton.

Or, given that crn would probably insist the signposts were wrong and get
    unutterably lost, M4/M25/M1.

Just not the A1. That'd be silly.

Surprisingly, I never get lost [1]. The A1 was a silly misreading of my own
route plan, the scribbled version says M1.

[1] Not lost, but very occasionally uncertain of my location, but I always
    get it sorted fairly quickly.

    Eh? They've long since finished those - it's the M25 that's roadworks
now, 'twixt M40 and J19 then moving round towards the A1 until 2012 or so.

I'm told* the M6 toll road is nice at this time of year...

It is, especially travelling east in the evening with the sun behind you,
when the Staffordshire countryside is bathed in a golden glow.
The Lichfield canal aquaduct is magnificent.
It's worth four quid even if it doesn't save any time.

TYVM for that suggestion. It only adds around 40 minutes to the
journey crawling along the A404 behind Volvos driven by hats.
    Not your brightest inspiration.

Not to mention the enduring agony of stuttering through Wycombe,
dragging through Chesham and snailing through bloody Berko.

Hey, I didn't say it was a _sensible_ suggestion...

When I'm traveling home from the NW I always use the toll road unless
the M6 is fucked south of Stoke and then I use the A50 and pick up the
    M1 near Donington.

Quickest route from Wycombe to Bedford is on the A40 up to the A43 and
then across the Aynho road to Buckingham, then along the A422 all the
way to Bromham. Trust me, I've done this trip by a number of routes and
the M40 to the A43 is by far the quickest.
