Keith Urban was uninjured Monday when he crashed his motorcycle near his
    home in Sydney, Australia.

In a statement issued by his publicist, Urban said he was "out riding to
an AA meeting, a time when my privacy is especially important to me,
(when) I felt myself being pursued" by a photographer on another motorcycle.

"I sped up, and in an effort to elude an oncoming car which was making
an illegal U-turn, saw no choice but to drop my bike," the 39-year-old
    country singer said.

"In actual fact, my pursuer came to my assistance, without taking
photos, and helped me from the road," Urban said. "I returned home, got
my car, and continued on my way."

I remember a few years ago, when Mark_Knopfler croppered.

    According to ninemsn:

"Urban was reportedly shaken but uninjured after running off the road
and hitting a gutter at Darling Point in Sydney's east.

The accident, just after midday, left a 10-metre skid mark on Darling
    Point Rd."

I rather suspect that rather than indulging in the foolishness of
"laying it down" he was faced with the choice between hitting the car
and coming off or hitting the gutter and (probably) coming off.

    Whose skid mark was it?

IF it was his then London to a brick he was hitting the back brake.
10m is a hell of a long mark for a motorcycle.

If it was the car's then it's still a long mark....

The car was doing an illegal U turn, so I doubt that it was going fast
enough to leave a 10m long skidmark. The published information isn't
    too terribly detailed, is it?

I thought that a panicked lock-up of the back brake was the automatic
precursor to the "I had to lay it down" story.

BTW is this Urban character famous in his own right, or is he just
    famous for who he roots?

He maks quite a bit of money from his singing apparently. So yes, he is
famous in his own right, but not in our age group.

...or our country. Apparently he's been living in the US for the past 20
years, so that's obviously where he took his training on how to crash a
motorbike correctly. I wonder how many people who say they crashed on
purpose could repeat the feat on request.
