Seems ok. Not that I've ever had to restore a disk - yet.

If you don't need insane amounts of space, Samsung has a 'extra mini'
disk (compared to traditional 2.5" disks in USB enclosures) called "S1
mini". It's 200 GB (which covers most of my needs for transporting
personal files, music and the odd movie), is *very* pocket friendly
(comes with a small leather cover), doesn't need external power and is
    not too insanely priced.

Highly recommended - and of course works with Linux (Ubuntu in my case)
even if the box doesn't say so. :)

Bought mine i Denmark for approx. 35 GBP on sale (from ~46 GBP)

Google suggests prices in the 40-45 GBP range in the UK.

Yeah. Buy two. They're dirt cheap and if you plug the second one in once
a week and run a script to mirror the contents across you won't give a
monkeys when the first one fails and you can buy a replacement twice the
    size for half the cost.

That's when the spare one comes in handy.

I mean, you'd keep a backup, right? You wouldn't trust an MTBF.

Yes, I do but I pay careful attention to the M bit of the bell curve and
make my own assessment ;-) Oh, and backup to another device and off-site
    and and and

  15. I wouldn't touch Western Digital after having 4 of them die on me. Hitachi
seems to be the current best player.

Many thanks for that, I'd not seen those. However I want 500GB, as I'll
be doing multiple backups of multiple devices.

In this instance, that's what I'd be using it for. Just to backup a couple
of laptops. If the external drive fails, I'll buy another and would have
to be very unlucky for the laptop to fail in the meantime.

That said, my desktop runs backups to the NAS, which has a mirror disc
attached to it, but mostly because I had the disc spare.
