Just noticed this on the http://www.motorbikebatteries.co.uk/ site: "Warning. Motorbike batteries should not be charged with car battery chargers." Hadn't heard that before but noticed on my charger it has a 6v/12v switch plus a Car/Motorcycle switch - what does it do differently? -- jeremy '02 Fazer 600 in blue _______________________________________ jeremy at hireserve dot com
Jeremy wrote Less Amps probably. Bike batteries are about a quarter of the electrical capacity and about an 1/8 of the physical size of a cage battery. Both Electrically and Mechanically they are a lot more fragile and delicate. You are also getting these here Gel batteries arriving on the after market in numbers now and they have to be treated even more carefully.
It's the rate of charge I believe. The car battery rate charging current rate is too high for a piddly ickle bike battery. I have charged a bike battery using a car battery charger and it never seemed to have any ill effects. It does charge them up rather quickly though!
Though no where near as quickly as the bikes own generator. -- ColonelTupperware, spouting bollocks on Usenet since 1997 Usenet FAQ at http://www.its.caltech.edu/its/services/internetapps/news/news2.shtml UPCE FAQ at http://upce.org.uk/ UKRM FAQ at http://www.ukrm.net/faq/
Bollocks, I reckon. A 1 amp charge, which is what most pikey car chargers give, should have no ill effect on bike batteries. I've only ever used them and never, asfaict, damaged any of my bike batteries. -- _______ ..'_/_|_\_'.
