I have a job to do soldering with soft solder an art work made of
    copper and brass sheet.

The piece is quite big, 4'+ and 3 dimensional. I want to avoid
distortion and discolouration as much as poss.

I anticipate hazards here and would like assistance from somewhere.

I am trying uk diy, is there anyone here who could point me
towards the right shelf for this sort of information?

Try normal multicore solder on clean metal with the help of some flux paste
    (from a plumber's merchants).

Use a heat gun, as sold for paint stripping, rather than a blowlamp.
These give good even heating with minimum colouration.
