V-STROM Opinions (Glitch... are you still about?)

I read Glitch's Nov 2004 review of the 650 in comparison to his 1000.

I'm in the market for a new bike, and am thinking a V-STROM may be
right for me. Most of my riding is commuting, with the occasional
weekend blast, and the even more occasional long distance trip.

I'm leaning towards the 650 for all the reasons Glitch talked about a
year ago.

Has anyone any comments to add on either of these bikes?

10K for a brand new bike is a pretty convincing argument. Suzuki
currently have factory discounts on a lot of their bikes so you might be
able to do even better than that.

I've seen a lot of info posted to the Oz Adventure Riders yahoo group
and have yet to see anything bad about them. Seem to be well liked and
quite capable in basic offroad conditions too.

giuy at work has one , which he likes a lot, uses it for commuting (20k each
way) , w/e rides
his previous bike was a zx9r and he says apart from the extra rush of the 9
, he doesnt miss it much

he finds it comfy enuff (he'd easy be 6 ft) and comfy enuff for his missus
to go 2 up

i think he's got a givi rack on it as well

and yes he was swayed by the $10K prioce tag AND the cheap insurance

****Nothing's changed....the DL650 is still the best value-for-$$ bike
around.
$10K ride away after haggling... same makes the 2006-model 1000 ~ $13K
onroad. ('05 models cheaper).
After nearly 3 years of owning one, I'd buy another tomorrow. No regrets.
The 20mm lower seat of the 650 fits the 1000, no worries.
Some early 1000s had shonky clutch-baskets, most should be fixed under
warranty by now (some owners didn't know better though, and keep plodding
along with harsh vibes around 3500rpm. Most grease-monkeys weren't all that
happy to fart around with warranty-claims and told joe bloggs to piss off
"vibes are normal for twins"....just not those, mate).

The screen (wind buffeting) is quite bad on ALL Stroms, regardless of year/
model.
Screen-and-helmet-combos are the deciders, what works for one, is crap for
the next.
Buffeting comes in beyond 120.
I still reckon the 650 is a bit skinny/ buzzy for long-distance 2-up work.
But easier to chuck around.
Best Jack-of-all-trades out there.

Another snippet...the 650's selling in bigger numbers than the 1000.
If you're getting it wrong by buying the 650 (and somehow regretting it
lateron), there's less $ lost on a possible re-sale.
