Booked a bike[1] in for MOT this weekend coming and he has asked me to
take the V5 with me? Is it just so he can stick it in the centralised
computer or is there another reason?

[1] yes wessie the Varadero, Decided to keep them both after all. Had an
offer and realised that I'd kick myself if I let it go.

  2. The new system compares the number on the V5 with the number actually
recorded on the chassis and the number recorded at the DVLA.

In theory, these should be the same. In practice, some errors crept into
the system which were not picked up before.

So as I just can't lay my hand on it at the moment, can they still do the
    MOT?

I'm looking to get it going asap, its been far too long since it had a
    decent run out.

    TIA

The last MOT cert should do as well.

IME, yes. I've had 2 bike tests and a car test since the computerisation. I
took the V5 for both bike tests, as it happened to be in the document
wallet in the topbox lid. None of the testers has asked for a V5.

As stated above, the presence of the V5 allows the tester to correct errors
on the database as they can enter the V5 serial no. as a cross reference.
IIRC from a conversation with a tester, there are other ways to correct
database errors. These probably involve completing additional forms or
using the telephone, something that eats into valuable tea drinking time...

AFAIKT they want it for the /first/ MOT on the new computerized system.
After that they don't bother. So if the previous one was hand-written...

few, found it for some reason clipped to a nail in the garage rather than
in the folder with all the other vehicle docs. Must have been pissed or
something when I last had it in my hand.

  10. He's just being lazy and a little bit wrong. He needs the VIN from the
actual vehicle but the V5 is normally right and a lot easier to read.
