valve clearances

Discussion in 'Australian Motorcycles' started by homeless penguin, Oct 15, 2005.

  1. Finally got around to doing the valve clearances today! Only taken me
about four weeks to get to it, but I've been pretty busy with new job
    & moving house etc...

Anyway...all the clearances are within spec, however several are right
on the borderline...so my question is: do/should I change the shims on
those valves? Some are right on the lower limit and some on the upper,
but I'm not sure what the "optimum" clearance should be.

    Any advice much appreciated! :)

  2. Valves usually tighten as the engine does more miles (seats/faces wear
causing the valve to move up). The ones on the loose edge I wouldn't be
concerned about, the ones on the tight end you could adjust now if you
wanted, but if they are in spec, they'll probably be right till next valve
    service.

  3. The tight ones are all on the intake (exhaust are all looking great),
so I might as well just do them now and not have to worry about it for
    that much longer. Thanks.

    someone has set them tight

the intakes rarely change , i would prefer them tight on the intake as i
    guess
you get that bees dick of extra valve opening allowing more air in

the exhaust ones are the ones to keep an eye on as they flow hot gas out
so this is why they change

    I heard that!!!!

But since you ask, I prefer mine on the slightly loose side, so that you
get a nice rustle of tappet noise once its warmed up.
