    any van experts?

I've found a rental place quite literally arround the corner from my
house, who can rent me a van to take some bikes up to Cadwell for a

    They have the following:

    Transit High Top SWB H 6' L 8' W 5' 6"

    VW LT35 High Top MWB 1.5 Ton H 6' L 11' W 5'6"

any guestimates as to how many bikes I'd get into each of these?

Assuming a typically sized sportsbike, 2 in the Tranny & 3 in the VW
fairly comfortably. If you're not worried about using the bikes
afterwards, you could probably get 30-40 in.

subsequently, I've found another place that can hire me a LWB transit
(3.9m long) for the same money as the MWB one above (though the first
place is literally round the corner from where I live, which is worth
    a little).

I'll be taking 2 of my own bikes + Simon Gates, and Cane's going now
too, so I need something to take at least 4 bikes, so the bigger the

You reckon? That's a tad optimistic IYAM.
Can I watch when you try to get 5 into the MWB?

Two max in the SWB, three at a push in the MWB.

    I have managed to get a gixer 750 and a zx6r into
a normal short wheelbase trannie, but it was a bit
of a squeeze (height wise, mirrors off job).

Two safely three if you dont mind a few dents

three safely , four at a push again if you don't mind a few dents

Make sure the vans have tie anchor points and you can access them some hire
    companies panel over them

  6. Small box van with a tail lift might be a better option , you could fit them
    in across the van then

I've always been amazed at what you can stuff into a trannie if you
    really push.

Is this for the Mallory day? I may well be going so could take a
bike either on my trailer (as it's a two bike trailer) or in the van
if my current plan comes to fruition...

All the VW vans I have driven recently (admittedly not this year's
model) are total crap compared to Transits. Nowhere to stick the
paperwork and the hazard light button is conveniently hidden behind
the steering wheel. The radios are wanky, mono, tinny efforts too.
The dash-mounted gear shift is not too kind to those of us who do not
    posses a bricky's wrist either.
