Ha ha; not just yet Ash... but don't put them too far out of sight OK?
No, it looks like it's not the catastrophe I thought it was going to be.

When I took the bike in to get it's "Safety Certificate" (roadworthy) I
found out it didn't have an engine number.
It's got the VIN on the chassis and compliance plate but just a blank panel
where the engine number should be:
    http://www.users.bigpond.net.au/bargearse/engine_no.jpg

A friendly source at Triumph gave me the original engine_no and said that
they had no record of the engine being changed and a Qld V-check confirmed
the engine number and that the bike wasn't stolen but couldn't give me a
"history" so I wanted to see if a Victorian one would fill in the details.
I may not have to now though 'cause Qld Transport seem happy-enough for me
to just engrave the engine-number onto the case myself (which I've now
    done).
I've got to get the engineering inspection now to have the "write-off"
    lifted. (fingers crossed)

Maybe the cases were replaced at some point. New ones may not be
stamped, though I wouldn't know for sure.

Sounds feasible. It is a Triumph after all. I know someone whose 955
Sprint ST had engine covers or cases replaced because the metal was
    porous and seeping oil.

    Is it old joke time?

Q: What should you do if your Triumph isn't leaking oil?
    A: Put some in it.

Well the website said "allow 24 hours ..." so I rang them on the Friday
    before.
I rang them again (and gave them my entire details again) on the
Wednesday... and I was getting a bit sick of not having transport so I
called again today and seem to have achieved an appointment on the day after
    tomorrow (Wednesday).

P'raps they should update the "24 hours" to "140 hours (if you push it)"
    just to be accurate!

OK; this was seriously BAAD advice!!
I have now "tampered with an engine number" and have to front the local
Police for a chat. (Probably TWO chats after I find the Qld Transport person
who told me to engrave the number and bash **** outta' them!!)

Next step is to apply for a "surrogate engine number" which I can't get an
appointment to do until next Tuesday and which could take several weeks IF
    APPROVED.

I must've killed a lot of black cats when I bought this bike.......

If you need someone to bail you out Clem, give me a call.

Can not let you rot in the slammer with all that steaming man meat around.

Thanks Boxer but won't you have to disassociate yourself from known
    criminals come next week?

Just a part of my "Community Work" Clem, helping to rehabilitate the down
    and out (without operating motorbicycles).

Could work well in the New Farm constituency.

I think it was the _bike_ that killed the black cat,Clem--and you're
    _its_ punishment...
Have you considered those bolt-on outrigger wheels they advertise in
    Road Rider?
