Ok guys and gals this is my first post on this newsgroup for many moons,
most people would remember me as Rustydog, Clem would remember me as the
visitor who drank his wine. Anyway this is completely off topic but so is
most of the news items on here. I am looking for a VeeDub beetle or kombi
engine (1600-2000cc) would prefer the motor and gearbox complete and running
and preferably with the subframe the condition of the rest of the vehicle I
dont care about as I will throw it away.
Can anyone help? Also need to be within easy driving of Roma Qld.

Is that within easy driving distance for the VW chassis? ;-)

If you're building a paddock basher/buggy, hold out for a Kombi
gearbox & transaxle. The reduction boxes make your low gear low
enough for off-road use, especially if you use smaller wheels on it.
If it was good enough for Hitler's boys' Kubelwagen, it's good enough
    for you! ;-)

I know of a couple of wrecks, but they're too far away for you (near
    Canberra).

In that case, do NOT use a Kombi gearbox and transaxle! The reduction
boxes (and lower diff ratio) is probably the last thing you need! ;-)

Actually you BROUGHT ME wine and didn't drink anything!!

Mate; there's gotta' be thousands of wobblys rusting in people's yards from
Toowoomba to Charleville (and Goondiwindi to Emerald). I reckon you need to
advertise in the local papers or shopping-centre notice-boards.

  6. Well, if you find anything within cooee of Brisbane, or between here
and Roma, my son will take body and trim bits if they fit our 1962
    Beetle...

Best I can offer is an early '60s 40-horse 1200 engine with rooted
main bearings. Not exactly the throbbing powerhouse you had in mind.

    Cheers,

In my memory, Kombis, at least the earlier ones, used the same gearbox and
diff ratio as Type 1's. Except that the Kombi had the pinion the other side
of the crownwheel and reduction gears, which reversed the drive direction
again, in the wheels. This also gave the Kombi a higher ground clearance.

I'd like to argue with you Theo, I really would, but unfortunately my
VW books/service manuals/etc. are packed in one of the many boxes in
    my shed at Funkytown.

So you win this time old man, but next time...!

I'll keep that in mind. I am going to look at a VW tomorrow so will let you
    know if parts are available

    We're fine thanks Rustydog.
Yep; I used gNat as a crash-barrier on the way back from the GP in 2005 and
neither she nor her mother is ever likely to forgive me! (That's actually a
lie; gNat forgave me there-and-then but I'll be cold in my grave before her
    mother ever does!!)
Her leg is OK now but she's got a nasty scar and she still whinges a lot.

The split screen Kombi's had reduction gears at the rear wheels, the Bay
    window Kombis do not.

I managed to get what I was looking for , a 1600cc VW motor, gearbox and IRS
subframe complete with brakes all in good condition. Only paid $1500 and I
dont have to think about removing from vehicle or getting rid of the surplus
body bits thats a bit of a bonus.
Now the serious work of building a frame.
