The downloadable trailer is fantastic but the full length movie is even
    better.

So who's actually bought a copy then? Judging by the number of people who
showed interest when he was working on it he could've retired on the
    sales...

.... or has everyone gone quiet now it's time to put your money where your
    mouth is.

Duct tape is like the Force. It has a light side and a dark

Heh. It's funny but many people don't appreciate just
how much you get screwed over by the banks when you
want to start taking online orders.

Typical credit card rates of 4% of your money (not
just the profit) that goes through their system. While
that in itself is not expensive per se, you have to
remember that to get to this point you need to be
a company that has been trading for a while (unless
you do sweet-talking to the bank manager) and have a
business account - which in itself is daylight robbery
    for the charges.

Then you need to pay to use their online merchant system,
which will cost your upwards of 400 notes just to register
with them. And no, you can't use your existing merchant
system (PDQ) that you're already paying for and just run
    the details through that either.

And this is all without getting some web monkey to get
the shopping cart working for you and paying for the
    secure webspace.

Paypal doesn't look too bad after all...

*ouch* Well the 4% on turnover doesn't look *so* bad... but then you
add in the rest including the business account (and I've had one of
these in the past, or at least been responsible for the management of
someone else's) and it looks expensive.

As you say Paypal looks good. Well, as some people have problems with
Paypal there's always "Nochex" to consider as well.

But still quite pricey - 100 to setup then 160pa to run.
They take 4.5% of the money that goes through the system
from credit cards and 50p per transaction using debit cards.
You then pay 35p each time it gets transferred from their
account to yours, four weeks in arrears, and you also get
charged a tenner for each charge-back made no matter what
    amount.

Most banks don't like you using anything but their own
branded e-commerce system for "security reasons" and,
as I said before, you usually need the same bank's business
account and they're not cheap either.

Note that WorldPay is owned by RBS.

*Waves* I look great in it.

I'd be interested to know how sales are going, given all the effort that
    went in to it. Dave?

  15. Not bad considering there's been no publicity for it yet

The review copies went out a couple of days ago, so hopefully everything
will go silly over the next month or so

What's your alternative? PayPal is going to have the same amount away.

PayPal is free to join [1] and now costs 25p for any
amount withdrawn below 50 quid and is free for all
withdrawals for 50 quid and over, making it much cheaper.

[1] Ok, so it debits $1.95 off your card which you'll
probably never get to spend or withdraw due to their
laughable exchange rates, but it's only a quid at the
    current exchange rates...

    I don't know.

I am supposed to be in the process of changing the way I earn a living
such that I may be classed as selling product to customer and have had
to consider the question. Fortunately mine is more akin to wholesale so
I will not be doing what Veggie is doing and I can demand cheque or
better still cash either up front or on delivery.

Although thinking about it, if I were shifting vids one at a time over
the web I would be inclined to make it as easy as I could for them to
part with their money right here right now because they are going to
change their mind if the have to mail me a cheque. I am sure I would
sell more overall, more than enough to cover the 4%.

I still think it is way to expensive and the system leaches off business
in a way that those who have only ever experienced it as a civilian have
no idea whatsoever. Parasitical is the only way to describe it.

As Ace once wisely said in reply to a related question of mine - why not
raise your prices to cover the merchant account costs?
All businesses, including yours, are parasitical if they make a profit,
    surely?
Why is PayPal's service (to traders) any less worthy of payment than the
service/products you or anyone else supplies?
