Despite them being a bit pricey I'm thinking it might be worth getting
some for my various trips later this year rather than using my bodged
keep the panniers off the exhaust solution of a big lump of metalwork.

Question is how much of the bracketry is actually removable when
    you're not using them?

It's just a glorified tailpack. Unless you can fit everything in it, and
not bother with panniers at all, it doesn't solve the pannier problem.

    Ventura kit rocks, IMO
I purchased the sport rack attachment to stick on when not using the back
over the hoop attachment. So I get the best of both worlds.

With the big bag it's 51 litres, my panniers are about 45 IIRC so it
should be ok. Plus it looks like you can run with it over the seat
and the rack sticking out the back to strap more stuff on if required.

Understatement of the year. It's got to be in the running for the most
    stupidly overpriced motorcycle accessory available.

  9. I had it on the TCat (actually bought from Mark Derbyshire), when not in
use you can just take the rack off and fit what they call a "sports"
grab rail. This is a lot easier than fiddling with the bracketry which
on the Cat involved removing indicators (but not fairing thankfully).
You hardly noticed it was there to be fair - not sure if that's the case
on whatever bike you're fitting it to.

Anybody want Ventura rails for a Cat? Quick before we bin them.

I've actually done some thinking and reckon I have an even better idea
for less money.. It goes something along the lines of buying a spare
pillion pad, a GIVI mounting plate, and a 50 litre topbox.

Don't bin 'em! They should fetch decent money on eBay.

You don't know what you're talking about here, I'm afraid. It wasn't
    long enough, or boring.
I've always found my journey to/from work is quicker in the wet and I
always claim it's because I'm trying to be smoother.

    <snip rest>

    Thanks for the writeup.

Tried em twice and got no bids. Will be binned in the house move.

I had Ventura stuff for the Tiger - it's a good compromise between
fitting rails for hard panniers and a bungeed on tailpack. I wouldn't
have wanted to pay for it new, if it hadn't come 2nd hand with the
    bike.

The advance over an ordinary tailpack is that it's really, really, not
going to come off. Having said that, I'm generally happy with
bungeeing a rucksack to the pillion seat, though I've been toying with
the idea of buying a Baglux system for the 12R.

I think it needs to be the right time of year.

The Oxford Sports tailpack I use has a chunky velcro strap that goes
under the pillion perch, four bungee hooks protruding from the base and
I use an extra couple of bungees at the top to keep it firmly attached.

A close friend tells me it doesn't budge an inch, even at 180mph.

The only downside is that it's a **** to attach when I'm using soft
panniers as well, because of the number of straps that want to go under
and over the pillion perch at the same time. Other than that, it's fine
    - in Pithiviers I fitted my tailpack to my thou faster than AntE managed
to put a Ventura tailpack on his 748.

I'm struggling to work out the luggage thang on the MV for the
impending trip. There's nothing at the back to hook bungees to, nothing
to wrap straps around & I hate wearing a heavy rucksack on a bike.

I suspect I'll end up having to bodge some metalwork to hold
throwovers, or just take a tankbag & spend the week smelly. Or take the
    Tiger.

Don't take the tiger, you'd regret it once you're there.

The indicators hang off the number plate holder, which in turn is a
flimsy plastic affair & definitely not up to the job. And the exhausts
are in the way of everything anyway.

I'm sure I'll figure something out, even if it means using throw-overs
at the front hanging down by the fairing. At least that'd keep me knees
    warm.

Maybe, maybe not. If it's gonna be mainly pass-bashing with endless
tight hairpins, I'd rather be on the Tiger - the steering lock on the
MV is abysmal! Anything else though then yes, I'd rather be on the MV.
