Is the gearbox meant to not go into neutral whilst the engine is
running, and should the gearchange be so stiff so as to make the tops
    of your toes bruised?

    No and No.

NC30s have pretty sweet gearboxes usually, check the gearchange shaft
    isn't bent.

Just another thought, check the clutch cable adjustment, it might be
dragging. There should be about 2 - 3mm of free play when the lever is
out. Any more than that and the clutch might drag when the lever is
pulled in, giving the symptoms you're describing.

Swot I fort, which is why we left it. Other than that the bike was a
peach, really clean, unbroken plastics etc. A real shame, the boy was
    gutted.

We are now waiting for your erm friend to call us back about her VFR.

    Okay.

There is someone else going to look at it at lunchtime, I left the
bloke by saying that we'd phone him later to see if it had gone, and
    possibly have a rethink.

If it's still there I may buzz back over and check the clutch, although
the action of it was very sweet.

She's full on Radio Rental mate, be warned. But, I hear the bike is a
nice one - offer her a grand and she might take it...just don't mention
    my name.

It might be sweet when you pull the lever in, but if the adjustment is
wrong then it'll drag. Simple cure if it is the cable, and something you
can knock about 200 quid off the purchase price for just in case it does
need a clutch rebuild or gearchange shaft.

Wot he said but you might also check the final drive chain as, if that is
very tight, you can get the same symptoms.

    Even cheaper to fix.
