Just the same width as a VFR with hard luggage.
As people suggest, put the laptop in a big top box or tank bag and remove
    the panniers.

It's starting to sound like you just need a new 600 sprotbike with Ventura
luggage or a Givi rack and hard topcase.

No, no - all of the new 600 sprots stuff is not big *enough*.

    I need something that's

    Bigger than a sports 600
Not as big as a hyper-tourer
    Comfortable
At least as fast as a three-quarters shagged ZX-6R
    OK with luggage
    Reliable

Given that under 7 grand would get me a brand new, non-ABS, VFR800 from
Lloyd Coopers it almost seems a shame not to. Almost.

Look, you've already been pointed at the newer Sprint ST. Even the old
one was a much better bike than the VFR, and side-by-side comparisons
with both the 750 and 800 proved it to be much quicker as well.

    YKIMS.

The people who sell the new ones are M&S who, frankly, are a bunch of cunts.

Mind you, the guy in the shop in the link above was crap.

Picture the scene, I turn up at the shop on a Tuesday afternoon. Almost
literally with my cheque-book in my hand.

There's only me and the sales guy in the shop.

    Him: You OK?
Me: I'm looking for a new bike, but I'm having problems deciding what I
    want.
    Him: Oh, right.
    <Silence>
    Me: The Sprint's nice
    Him: Yeah
    <More silence>
Me: I need something reliable, what are they like?
Him: Well it's done <leans over and looks> 13,000 miles, so it's probably
    alright.

    And so it went on.

Now giving that I've the fiscal responsibility of a magpie and roughly the
same attraction to shiny new things selling a bike to me should be a piece
of piss, but this guy was crap.

And if Lloyd Coopers sold them cheap I'd probably phone up and get one, but
they don't ... cunts sell them expensive.

Ahhhh so you want an FZ1 ABS, the half faired version then, don't you. You
can get a 2006 with under 5k miles for £5.5 and have your own luggage
    fitted.

    150bhp
    200kg
    18L fuel tank

and don't be put off by the Yamaha badge, they look incredibly well finished
with everything that might corrode covered in thick baked-on looking
coatings. Bound to need the odd sumito brake caliper service I suppose.

WC's was deeply impressive without being any sort of wheelie/stoppie
monster. Beats the living shit out of any VFR.

And I saw one tonight on the way home and it looked lovely. And they
were one of the fleet bikes for the Tour de France. Coped with all those
    hills and bends perfectly well.[/QUOTE]

    Aren't the TdeF escort/camera bikes GTR1400s rather than ZZR1400s?

They've been out here for at least a month IIRC. I believe Kawasaki
supply them to TdeF outside of their normal dealer network. And ITYF
they're ~135 hp at the rear wheel:

    http://www.concours.org/forum/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=32718

So, not as powerful as the ZZR1400 on top but I'll bet it pulls like
the proverbial train from low RPMs.

What he 'needs' is a new 600 sports bike and a wanked out old commuter
    for the work bit.

Erm if you have to fall back to the point where the rolling Marshals have
opened the road again it is fucking difficult to catch them up again on a
lardy Tourer. Trust me on this.

It's the doping, you see-- chappies were easily outpacing the normal
100 hp bikes so they had to bring in a few ringers.
