Take hold of the new link. Open the sachet of grease, lube the pins
and wipe a bit at the base of each pin. Drop an 'O' ring on each pin.
Squeeze a bit of grease onto the 'O' ring.
Line up the link with the chain ends and slide the pins through. Push
an 'O' ring onto each pin, squeeze some grease onto it and close with
    the side plate.
Mushroom the ends of the pins.
I'll do you a swap for my Bandit: it has a new chain and doesn't use
    coolant.

Aye but that's the knarly bit that folk don't like doing.
I'm not that keen on it myself, if the right chain tool isn't to hand,
as I never feel positive that I didn't get the link too tight or the
    pins sufficiently secure.

All of the above I'd already done...
....but this bit stopped me in my tracks. I was expecting the pins to be
hollow, like wot they usually are. But they ain't. It was only when I
spotted the clip link buried at the bottom of the bag that the light
dawned. Looks like I'm going shopping tomorrow[1].
Jolly kind of you, but I couldn't possibly put you to such
    inconvenience.

[1] Which should make BGN happy.

Did you leave the hub lying flat when it was in the oven or did you
have it standing on it's side?

On its end, so the hole was facing up iyswim. Why? Are you going to
tell me it's now distorted & I have to go & buy a magnesium one to
    replace it - please...

O.IC. HST, I'm sure I've mushroomed solid pins before - you only need
to spread them a tiny amount, to retain the side plate. Four taps
with a medium hammer, while holding a big hammer behind works for me.
This place is going downhill. No V-Max yesterday, now no MV today.

    You're all tight cunts.

I tend to make sure they're riveted properly leaving no chance of them
making a break for freedom. A centre punch is usually employed to
leave a nice big dent in the centre then a ball pein hammer completes
    the procedure.

Hey, I only do this sort of crap on an almost daily basis so what
would I know about heat distortion?

Have you checked that the bearing isn't still loose after the casting
cooled down? This one is quite serious btw, some castings don't return
to the same size after being either heated or frozen. You might have
to spend some of your hard earned cash..

I think you may have misunderstood my "please", & on reading it back, I
can see why you might. I meant 'please tell me I need to buy a mag one
coz I really, really want one', not 'oh purleeeese, gimme a break'
    iyswim.
The second bearing was harder to get in, so I think it had shrunk
again. Plus it's a fairly tight fit in the swingarm, so I'm pretty sure
I'd have noticed a struggle if it was still swollen. Also the
paintmarks on the pinch bolts lined up perfectly when torqued - another
good sign. I'll keep a close eye on it for the first couple of hundred
    miles though.

I thought softlink pins generally had hollow ends? Anyway the problem
is as this is a split link, the pins are longer, & have grooves for the
circlip thingy just outside the sideplate. So whilst I could splay the
ends enough to stop the sideplate coming off, it would still have room
to move out & let shite in behind it. I think a trip to my local bike
emporium for a pukka softlink would be more prudent.

Good plan. I wouldn't try to use a hard link as a soft one and I
wouldn't use a spring clip on something putting out (at a guess) about
110bhp as your bike probably does.

I'd sussed out that you might want a magnesium one hence my comments
    in the next paragraph.
That's ok then. I've fucked up more than once putting components
together by using heat where it really wasn't the best idea.

Aye, positive. There was a chain, a quick release sprocket system & two
    sprockets, but no softlink.
