    I spent lunchtime yesterday filling out a "War and Peace" sized
    application form for Income Protection Insurance. Along with the
    various crucial things that the insurance company apparently needed to
    know about me (height, weight, medical conditions, shoe size...) was a
    fair-sized section devoted to "hazardous activities". This was
    concerned with details such as:

    * Scuba diving;
    * Bungy jumping;
    * Hang gliding;
    * Parachuting;
    * Any form of football;
    * Competitive motorsport;
    ...
    * Trail bike riding.

    Nowhere in there could I find an entry for "riding a motorcycle on the
    road", so I'm pleased to point out that road motorcycling must be an
    inherently "non-hazardous" activity.

    I should have kept a copy to show to those trail bike riders who
    regularly call *me* crazy for riding on the road! ;-)

  2. I waded through an hour and a half of similar with AXA - about 4 weeks
    ago. THEIR form includes regular motorcycle riding (ie: commuting) as a
    High Risk activity.

    I'm not sure if it was my "daily" response to that, my little flirtation
    with cancer, or my age - but I got a call yesterday to say that my
    application for income protection insurance had been denied.

    Looking on the bright side, I've saved $700 per year in premiums.

    I recall having a similar pleasant surprise with my income protection
    insurance. BTW I see many, many more injuries from trail bike riders in
    the Emergency Department than road riders.

    I have the forms at home, I haven't read them yet, but the guy said that
    motorcycle riding isn't considered hazardous. But I will read the paper
    work. This is with ING.

    Who is it through? Did you have to get a medical, or did they take your
    word?

    Mine was the same. Even "the occasional track day" was fine,
    apparently. Just not competitive motorsport.

  7. I used to use it in the early 80s to keep those painful life insurance
    salesmen from ringing back.

    "Yeah - I'm an ex-asthmatic who goes scuba diving each weekend. Did I
    mention I ride a motorbike, race cars and have a pilots licence?"

    AMP. I've had a policy with them for about 9 years, and I was just
    changing the waiting & benefit periods. They didn't want a medical,
    and I'm still waiting to see if they want blood tests done (doubtful
    since I ticked the "AIDS exclusion" box).

    It all comes down to the wording of it, and the courts would take
    their side if it came down to it - you can bet on it.

    That one's not up to your usual standard, Big.

    (The last time I heard a gay=AIDS joke was when those "Why are
    Aboriginals called Boongs" type of jokes were still fashionable).

    My job prevents me from getting it. Apparently designing muniitons is
    considered hazardous. Try getting a hazard allowance though :)

    I would have thought that either the constructing or the testing would
    be the hazardous part?
