Which works with IE6 and Firefox but not with Opera v9.0. With Opera it
just keeps going back to the original message.

That was the point. It is fucked with IE7 and Mozilla 1.7.13, and that's
    fucked enough for me.

Works fine with Firefox 2.0.0.2 too. WTF are you using outdated
    browsers, you fossil?

Good point but it works with Solaris and Mozilla 1.7 and doesn't work on any
of the XP machines in the house, so I can at least book my tickets.
I would still like to find out why it works on some browsers but not
on others. It looks like http://www.virgintrains.co.uk/default.aspx
shows the traincrash message unless the Referring URL is also
    ..../default.aspx,
in which case it displays the real front page.

Just loaded Firefox 2.0.0.2. It doesn't work on that either!
I'll go and install it on another PC.

With Opera9.10 - disable javascript, refresh the page and there you are.
Oddly, turning javascript back on and refreshing the page doesn't result in
the announcement page being displayed again.
