    disciple or an enemy of the state.

    Conclusive proof that who you go to school with is of no relevance to
    future success. If the prosecution requires further evidence I'll cite

    Anyone know of a link where all the train-like (or plane things etc) are
    explained, 'cos seeing all those numbers and signs without knowing what
    they mean, is rather frustrating ..

    I can't find any pictures of that side of the cab though.

    The door systems are a bit more than how you described though as the GPS
    determines where the train is and if it's at a platform shorter than the
    train (say it's a 12 car at a 7 car platform) it'll only open the doors
    (the first 7) opposite the platform. Unfortunately, it's not accurate
    enough to determine which platform it's at (up or down) and if they're
    different lengths it'll default to the shortest.

    A thread yesterday or the day before took me to the Concorde page, where
    I learned (among other things) that a gap one foot in length appeared
    behind the flight engineer's bulkhead during supersonic flight, and that
    on the final flights, the engineers left their hats in there .. or that
    the front windows were too hot to touch &c. It's useless crap like that
    that both fascinates me and brings home to me my own ignorance.

    Hence my request. For example in Paris métro stations, if you get on
    the front carriage and look past the driver into the tunnel, you see red
    LED counters (three, IIRC) with digits that, if you stand there long
    enough and watch 'em (at off-peak times or like today when line n° 1
    went tits-up at the Châtelet station), seem to follow no pattern that I
    can discern. And there are a set of three LEDs in a triangle which
    flash. What do they do? What are they for? All this stuff, I _want_
    to know (but realise that you might not know, being a British train
    driver and all that).

    the entrance to the stations means), but it's pretty cursory.

    I'd always thought that GPS (at least outside American military
    applications) wasn't accurate to any more than 20 metres or so.

    That's why it can't tell which platform it's at. It knows which station
    (none of the stations are closer than 20 metres) but can't tell if it's
    on, say, the northbound or southbound platforms. There would seem a
    simple solution but most platforms can be bi-directional in certain
    circumstances which complicates things.
