Heh .. I should have thought of asking you. :)

I seem to recall reading years ago that the delay between trains
couldn't be fewer than 2 minutes, and then in the early nineties, they
reduced this due, presumably, to advances in technology.

That's where wiki comes in (see below): I can't imagine spending dosh on
something to do with trains (or with Concorde), but going to bed knowing
a bit more than I did when I got up, is satisfying. I prefer to get
in-depth stuff from books. I'm currently reading Chaïm Potok's _L'Elu_
as well as the French translation of his _Wanderings_.
The RATP sells stuff, IIRC and they do have an outlet somewhere but I'm
fucked if I can remember where it is.

    This any use ?

Wiki is actually quite cool, I find, for 'basic information', especially
about subjects of which one is mainly ignorant. I've read its page on
French, for example, and learning nothing, and the entry for UNIX only
taught me that the UNIX shell on Mac OS-X 10.5 ('Leopard') has received
Open Group certification. Woo-eeh. A mate who's doing lingustics tells
me that wiki's definition of 'dialect' is fucked, moreover, and I just
scanned the entry for 'GPS' most of which, naturally enough, went miles
over my head (pun sort of intended, even if it was crap).

    Thanks for the info, though.

How can something with so much hi-tech kit still look like it was
    designed in the '50s?

More to the point, how can it be so clean?? Here in Paris, if you peer
into the driver's cab as the train slows to a halt next to you, the
surfaces are black and grubby as ****.

I think you misunderstand the story.

In the UK there is a court order to prevent the name of
said Royal family member being made public. This means
that no news reports in the UK will name them.

However, that obviously doesn't apply overseas, so all
you have to do is Google (as above) for the story and
see what turns up from the foreign press.
    Quite.

The problem is that people do care. It's still considered 'wrong' to be
gay, otherwise there'd be no blackmail attempts. If Linley (or whoever
it is) had just shrugged and said, 'GAF?', there'd have been no story.

Not being subject to UK court orders, I could tell you.

But you're not nice to me.

I seem to recall that it's no longer so garbled. Certainly
geophysicists are able to measure movement between too GPS systems to
    the millimetre level.

    Are you sure about that?

Is the story about outing a gay royal or outing a person in a position of
    power over a flunkie?

The former is irrelevant but the latter would be of concern.

It was in the title of the third news story down when
I posted it earlier. It's still there if you click
on the "all nnn news stories" link.
The clue is in the title... oops!

    Try this one instead:

Ok, to the nearest few millimetres (the technique only measures the
movement between two GPS measurey thingies). It's enough to get a
fairly good measure of lava dome formation, AFAIAA (and according to
    Jurgen Neuberg).
