    It has 'Resident Shield' and up until now I haven't really looked at the
    settings. The default is to scan 'infectables' only and not do 'on-close
    scanning'.

    "On-close scanning - select this if you want the Resident Shield to test
    files that are downloaded from the Internet or other computer on a local
    network even if they are not accessed by a local user. While this
    feature leads to earlier detection of viruses it does not offer any
    greater protection. Furthermore it is more demanding on system
    resources, which may adversely affect computer performance."

    The advanced features which allow you to add to the 'infectables' list
    is not available in the Free version. As far as I can see .ZIP is not in
    the list???

    I have turned on scan all and 'on-close' for now and will wait and see
    if this greatly slows everything down.

    I'm using firefox.
    Nothing here at all.
    Mcafee found nothing, doing a search for the errant file produced zip.

    I'll relax again now.

  4. AntiVir (free) is good at real-time scanning.

    Logically it's not needed. Any infectable file will be scanned *after*
    it's unzipped.

    Excellent point. Is it safe to assume that merely unzipping cannot
    prompt execution?

    From Winzip's site:

    "Additionally, self-extracting Zip files can optionally run a "setup" or
    "installation" program, provided by the creator, after the files are
    decompressed.

    Can't be arsed to go look now, but all I saw was pretty 'standard'
    javascripts for the google functions.

    Indeed. However self-extracting zip files have a .exe extension and are
    executable....

    I just went to have another look. Interesting:

    /script><div id="EBdescription"> <!-- Begin Description --> <span
    id=dta style="display: none;">You and mbczxvn me and ljgdasfhk fr
    piyrwqetuo.
    </span>
    <script>

    This could well be a bad thing. It still doesn't cause Java to open
    here, though.

    complifecarated for an old git. No virus problems when I first got in to
    PCs in the days of Visicalc and CCA database.
