The good news is that I was able to install XP on it today, despite it
only having 128MB [1]. The bad news (for you) is that it is a better
spec than I thought (800MHz, 20GB) so I will be using it myself unless
and until they ask for it back.

[1] Not tried to run anything useful on it yet though [2]

[2] I now have to acquire a legit copy of XP [3] before I can use it
in anger. Time to ring a friend.

[3] Just remembered. Is there something about being allowed to
install the same copy on a laptop as well as a desktop? Need to check
    up on this.

    1. I would say "It's Windows", but it's not that. It's okay and is a
fairly decent OS for a Smartphone, but there are a lot of bugs. Whether
these be MS bugs or Orange bugs, I don't know. There are also a few
dodgy workarounds. For example, when you filter calls, it goes through
a visible sequence, that seems to me that someone has programmed the
phone to send a sequence of keys.

    2. But it takes bloody ages to "boot up" (in the order of around a
    minute or so).

    3. It does slow down quite a bit, when you have a number of
applications running. Fairly normal, but I think that the problem stems
from the fact that certain applications don't always shutdown properly
    and remain in memory.

    4. I don't like the fact that it's Orange branded. Mind you, it's only
sold buy Orange in Europe, I believe. And it's not possible to buy a
    non-branded phone.

    5. Orange have this habit of locking down their phones, so that you can
only do things with them (e.g. Software development, Phone upgrades,
etc) with their acceptance. For example, I can't upgrade my K700i with
the Sony Ericsson upgrade service, as "My provider doesn't allow me to
use this service". If I buy something or use a service, it's for me to
decide how I use that service. If the service provider doesn't like it,
then they can tell me to go elsewhere. Considering my phone bills are
in the order of between £200-£600 per quarter, I don't think that
    they'll do this.

    6. It's fucking ugly.

    7. The camera is shite (640x480) and there's no flash/light.

One of the few things it does have going for it, is that the battery is
good. Also the fact that you can lob in memory cards. TBH, I stuck in a
512Mb card but never use it.

The thing is, that they may not be 'practical' reasons for not liking
the phone, but the main one is that I don't feel comfortable with it.
You know, when something doesn't click?

How are phones running with Symbian? Is it much more stable? Worth a
    look?
    I was not impressed.
Now this is another thing. There's a link on the phone for s/w
upgrades. Every time I've clicked on this, it tells me that there are
    no upgrades available. :-/

    However, would a s/w u/g make a difference, I ask myself.
    I guessed as much.
In France, the Telco's still have power. Specially Orange.

Mind you, you can't easily develop software for the SPV, as there's a
certificate that stops you running uncertified apps, IIRC. You need to
go to Orange and get that revoked.
As you said, taste is personal. Some of the new Nokia's look quite sexy.
I use the camera every so often. For work purposes, etc. More
    resolution is more practical.
I know, I know. I need to pull my finger out and look for one.
There's a version of Othello knocking about, which is vicious. I've
never beat it (and I'm fairly good at Othello)

I've not noticed that but I don't have filter calls set up. I do know
what you mean about implementation of some stuff is a bit shit, I'm
thinking bluetooth file transfer and certain aspects of messaging.

It does do an awful lot though.

I don't turn it off that often.

When you say branded do you mean the theme (which can be changed very
easily) or the little orange square on the case (which I ignore)?

I unlocked my SPV so I could install any software on it. I can't find the
link but it was using an unlocking tool downloaded from Orange's
    developer's site.

Mine are in a similar order and I don't get any bother - the services I
want I get at what I think is a reasonable cost, either bundled in with
the monthly charge or as cheap out of bundle extras. Perhaps that's the
difference between Orange in France and the UK

It's not the flashest I've seen but it doesn't look too cheap (the silver
one does mind) it also looks fairly plain, which is good IMO.

When I've needed to take pictures of blown turbos its been there for me.
Sadly it seemed to play up after the outfit escapade but that's probably
    no bad thing.

I know what you mean; for me as a phone and a PIM it works well but isn't
going to change the way I live my life.

It's not the phone's fault that you live in a shit country.

Bear in mind, that you may have a later version of the OS. When I
choose to look at calls and then filter them, it's very shoddy.
True, but TBH I think that I can get away with an iPAQ with a decent
sized screen, to do exactly the same and just use the phone as, er,
    well, a phone.
I do, primarily because I fly quite often.
The fact that the SPV is *only* sold by Orange (in France) means that
they have a minor monopoly as to what they sell and the prices they
sell at. I couldn't even buy a bloody car charger, until my recent trip
to the UK. Even then, I had to go to an Orange shop. This is what I
    mean.
That's what I did. But I had to do this on the UK website as the
    facility wasn't/isn't available in France

I *really* don't appreciate them telling me what I can install/run on
    my phone.
The actual service side of things, I'm happy with. I've never had
problems with customer service, signal quality, etc, etc. The billing
side of things, I don't care. The company pays. :)

I know that! It's just a bit of a cumbersome MP3 player, innit?

I've not actually used that mode. I know that I can, but I reckon it's
more hassle than it's worth explaining to Steward(esses) on the plane
that it's a "fight mode" and go through the rigmarole of explaining it.

One Q though. If you activate it before going on the plane, turn the
phone off for take off and then turn the phone back on; does the flight
mode stay activated upon switching back on?
I didn't know that. £10 in the Orange shop. Mind you, claimed back on
    expenses...

That's not an issue any more. They sometimes say "is that switched
off", and you reply "yes", but tbh it's ages since anyone's even asked
    me.
If it works the same as Pocket PC Phone Edition (which doesn't really
    switch off), then yes.

Now then, are you condoning leaving electronic equipment on, during
    take off and landing?
    Oops. <fx: sheepish grin>

Fairy nuff. TBH, it comes back to taste and for me, it's not my taste.

I think I'll give it to one of my colleagues...
