Quite enlightening, so it is [1]

It appears that wireless has taken off big style. 300 or so WLANs found
on the short round trip to the tip this evening.

A large number insecure too [2]

[1] In a geeky sort of way.

I've got 5 in range of my house (small village). Mine's the only one
    that appears secured.

Doesn't take a proper hacker to sniff the traffic and search for
    passwords though.
So get a better wireless card, or even just a USB wireless dongle.

Well if you do that, hide the SSiD and limit the number of connections
to what you use then there isn't going to be much of a problem.

Sir might be interested that after the ongoing shiteyness of the Netgear
USB dongles on my desktop, I lashed out 14.99 at my local Staples for a
Philips USB wireless access thingy. Up to 108Mb/s, WEP/WPA/WPA2.

    Works a treat.

You assume wrong. POP3 is all in the clear by default and it doesn't
take a genius to search for USER and PASS in a packet trace.

Does it not have a USB socket on the back? Goodness gracious, man, with
*that* carpet and *that* photo on the wall, surely you don't expect me
to believe your living room is meant to impress!?!?

But surely you know that the emission of encrypted packets has a greater
ultrasonic effect than that from more linear unencrypted packets? And
your race bike is now within range of those emissions.

By encrypting your LAN, the fuel system of your race bike will be kept
in tip-top condition, generally cleaner with reduced varnishing.
Similarly, ingrained dirt particles on the fairing will be may be
loosened, leading to greater aerodynamic efficiency. It's just like when
you get a scale and polish at the dentist and the hygienist turns on the
machine that makes the noise you used to be able to hear when you were
    younger.

Don't forget that the USB access point that they're knocking out in
Staples is from Philips; and they make this :-

TBH, I don't give a toss about your emails and LAN security per se, but
if you encrypt your LAN, your race bike will go faster.

Oh, and your teeth will get whiter as you sleep.

I suspect you're wrong there. In fact I'm 99.99999% sure of it, but
don't want to stick my neck out too much

All network traffic is vulnerable to someone with a packet sniffer.
Corporate environments should notice if someone is sniffing packets, and
of course the idea is that you don't let people have the packets to
    sniff. IYSWIM

If same sad fucker wants to download kiddie-pr0n[1], or hack into something
using your equipment as a base?

[1]And stores it in a hidden or innocuous sounding directory in, say,*
    \windows\sytem32.

Odd but true. Some clients and servers will support SSL to add an
encryption layer, but it's fairly uncommon. Hence why single use
passwords, public key, two-factor authentication and SSL-encrypted
    webmail are becoming increasingly common.

A noble argument, and one to which I often subscribe myself.
