What's the best stuff to use to wash a bike? Purpose built cleaning
products or soapy water? My mate swears by washing the whole thing with
GT85 (the idea being its a good cleaner and wont lead to rust, though I
think it's a bit overkill — even harmful on some materials?). So a
shout out here since my bike's accumulating flies, what's the best way?

  2. Gunk or Jizer, rinse off with a hosepipe, then ordinary car shampoo.

    Then polish. Lots of polish.

are the Tesco products any good (like their bug remover etc) or is it a
case (like with most things) that you get what you pay for?

I've been using Cif bathroom cleaner (lemon). Excllent for removing all
kinds of shite and zero damage to whatever it's been sprayed onto. Rinse
with a hose and the crap falls off the bike.
Asda do a polish (oddly enough called "Asda polish":) that's fucking
incredible. I think I got mine as part of a little "package", but the whole
package couldn't have cost more than a fiver. It's probably not "quite" as
good as Mer or Autoglymm Resin, but it's still bloody good.

    I'd think it's about a quid a bottle too.

    In communiqué <1igoj5j.4v6s321u25aegN%>,
Does Gunk still smell a bit like an Elsan loo? I've tried several
pre-cleaners including Gunk, Jizer, Autoglym Motorcycle Cleaner, and
most recently Muc-off. This was because the lad wanted the sticker for
his YZ85 and there was a deal that also included a free bottle of their
    visor cleaner.

The Autoglym is not cheap, but I find that if you leave it to soak for a
while a little goes a long way, with no dodgy camp site chemical bogs
    odour when things heat up.

Rock Oil SOC is the best stuff I've ever used. I always have it in,
and buy it in 5l cans.

If your REALLY anal a Clay detailing kit adds that extra sparkle.

They do a Bike range as well but I can't pass comment as I've not used
    that

Sadly Gunk is now a weakened cat piss version of its former dark coffee
coloured self. The smell is also different, especially on a hot engine.
I actually liked the smell of original gunk, I grew up with the smell of it
on a hot engine after my uncle had cleaned his bikes, along with the smell
of duraglit in the exhaust headers :)

I washed my hair with it once, after an afternoon's undersealing of a
    Morris Minor.

Lovely sheen, but then "I'm worth it"

Quite. I'm waiting for the inevitable downpour after this hot spell so
the bugs from last weekend's jaunt will get wahed off the fairing.
