  1. It's certainly raised a loud chuckle here. And I don't event ravel by
    train.

  2. I'm only telling you the truth. I believe it is called "managing
    expectations" ;-)

What's the line through Sandy and Biggleswade like, then?

I did it two weeks out of four from Bedford into St Pancras and rarely
had a problem. admittedly I often took the Midland Mainline rather
than the FCC but that was only due to it being quicker.

The FCC starts at Bedford so you can always get a seat and it only
gets *really* crowded at St Albans.

    heh

Last night was my first foray into London since we moved house, so now,
instead of the slow line from Bracknell to Waterloo, I did Blackwater
to Reading (only two stops - 15 mins) and then Reading to Paddington
(another two stops - 30 mins). Very civilized, it was.

Those FGW 125s may be old, but they're far better than the new standard
    rolling stock on SWT.

  6. Ironically it is the same company - First Capital Connect - who run
that line. To be fair it has been spared the nightmare that was
inflicted on the Thameslink route when there was a driver shortage
coupled with management incompetence. Generally the trains out of
Kings Cross to Cambridge and Peterborough seem to have a better
reliability record but the line is extremely busy. The main problem
that goes wrong is the wires coming down which happens a little too
    frequently.

I doubt I need to teach you to suck eggs about money but you need to
look at season ticket prices if you're thinking of moving out to the
sticks and commuting into London - but make sure you're sitting down
    first.

Also check public transport links between home and the station. That'll
    kill most locations dead.

The price difference between houses in the countryside and houses in
the IOD would buy seasons tickets for several lifetimes. I'm looking
    at six years, tops.
Madam's volunteered to unearth her driving licence.

FCC can have no greater terror in store than that.

In which case, check car-parking charges at your station of choice. At
Hitchin it's generally cheaper and more convenient to torch the car on
arrival. At least that way you get to leave the car closer to Hitchin
    than Stevenage station.
Good point, well made. And may the Lord have mercy upon your soul. Oh,
    and check your emails.

Nah, this would be a drop-off and return scenario. Linda has decided
that she's too old for all that "going to work" nonsense.
    Checked.

  13. We've sort of made it, insofar as we're off to Chile in a couple of
years. But it's not like we won't be working.
