Well, I hope I waved at some of you on Hwy 9, 84, 35, etc this weekend.
I logged a lot of miles on my
R1100GS. It has two BIG PIAA lights and I wear a baby blue riding
jacket - wave back if you see me!
If we stop at the same place I'll buy you a drink.

The roads were nice and I was testing our my Etymotic Earphones.
Damn. They block the wind noise better
than foam plugs PLUS they are headphones so I can listen to tunes... at
a low volume I can hear music AND
the engine. Ahh... I'm going to check the weather forecast and if it
looks good tomorrow I'm calling in sick!
I need to wear out these tires to get a new pair for the riding season!!!

If any of you play hooky too I'll wave at ya!

Those are sweet plugs. I got some of those Sensaphonic sleeves made for my
ER-6i and they worked really well. The triple flange pinched off the sound
tube in one ear as my ear has a radical bend in it. Once made, all was
    well....

....until I got the Westone RM-1 (motorcycle ones) custom molded ones made at
the Cycle World International Bike Show (cost was $325 as I recall from
outfit in Colorado near Westone). Those really work well, sort of like the
Shure models (little more bass than the Ety's which are very clear though in
the upper end). They have a harder arcrylic outer piece and a soft silicon
inner part. They have a black twisted pair cord that is very flexible and
can be put under the zipper cover snaps with the player in my pocket.

They seal better than the Etymotic's (they are larger and cover more of the
helix of the ear). You are right in that you can play music at lower volume
levels which is good for your hearing. Too bad I lost the damn Ety's
somewhere. I had them in a pouch and I think they fell out when I got
raincover out. Least I still got the Westone's.

    Go play hooky.

  3. I always wave unless I'm too busy at the controls...
I finally anted up $165.00 for custom molded ear plugs with tiny Sony stereo
speakers... they proved to be comfortable plus cancelling up to 30 db of
    fatiguing wind noise...

    Looks good.
Hmm... Regarding the hookup, is all this contained in the tankbag? If the
receiver is affixed to the handlebars, how do you plug it all in (single
    multi-connector or what?
If this antenna mount is under the fairing, then I'm guessing the unit
cannot be used without the tank bag (if the AudioVox is a multi-input mixer
    like the AutoCom)?

(who is looking to do the same at some later time after I get the GPS and
radar detector mounted semi-permanently to the dash somehow)

    Oh, crap. I forgot.

"Do you hear any alternator or spark plug noise with it in use?"

I'm picking up some alternator whine and spark plug snapping which is
driving me crazy (the more treble Ety phones pick it up easier). Seems it
is coming in on the power supply line to the AutoCom (grounding to battery
hasn't helped). If I run it on its own battery, it is quiet - but it only
lasts a day on the 9 volt.

  6. I had this problem when I had the Valentine 1 plugged in to the Autocom.
Switching to their opto-isolated audio cable helped a bunch, but made
the alert sound kinda strangled on the helmet speakers. I don't think
that would work well for music.

Positioning can make a big difference. I have everything (Autocom, V-1,
power/relay/fuse bank, HeatTroller, cig lighter jack for GPS) mounted
inside/on a Rat Shack project box with a single power lead. Simply
raising it up and back inside my tank bag eliminated quite a bit of whine.

BTW - a cell phone in "I have no signal, where is the mothership" mode
seems to set off the Valentine 1 every two minutes or so if they are
next to each other. I drove my friends crazy on one trip 'til I figured
    that out...

    I hate RFI.

  7. The receiver is in the bottom storage compartment of the tank bag... the display
is affixed to my custom tank bag bracket...

I employ a simple Radio Shack cord that interfaces my "Oh Shit" radar detector
    with the music...

Correct... the antenna is hidden under the tail cowl but the Audio Vox is just a
simple receiver... fortunately it puts out enough to power a set of tiny ear
    phone speakers...

  8. Which Sony model did you use to make them, and who did them for you? I
can't get the in-canal earphones to stay in my ears under a helmet to save
my life, but something like this could work.

Interesting. They were also at the Long Beach show along with another
vender called "Nationwide Alliance for Hearing Protection." Your vender was
very busy so I went with these guys out of Colorado Springs. Aside from a
minor issue of them forgetting to mail the box of molds off to Westone Labs
to make their version called RM-1 (sort of a Shure single-driver unit in the
mold) , they worked quite well considering mine failed around two weeks into
    ownership.

I thought "Great! Now what do I do?" I e-mailed Westone (the hearing aid
company) and actually got a real person who called me and asked what the
problem was (one side was cutting off if I moved the ear snorkle portion a
bit - intermittent electrical failure). The guy said send them back and
we'll take care of it. Well, in less than a week of me shipping them off
(U.S. Postal Service) I had them back and they even did some fancy stuff to
where the cord exits the back of the earpieces so it wouldn't catch on the
helmet and twist out of my ear when I took the thing off. So far so good
and the seal is excellent. The cord exists straight down through a hard
tube which becomes softer and angled to not catch on the helmet's fabric.
The wire is a black twisted pair and so far it has worked like a charm. The
unit is, for the most part, clear and you can see the tube and get any ear
goop out of it with a hooked hearing aid cleaning tool.

Cost was around $325 as I recall, but they are with me all the time on the
bike. They seal better than the foamies too and are far more comfortable.

I also got a pair of Sensaphonic ProPhonics 2X dual-drivers that are
supposed to be the cat's meow (they should for $750!) but I don't get a good
seal and the sound suffers a lot if the seal isn't good. They are being
    recast now.
