Any recommendations for an idiot proof program to encrypt and back up
data onto a cd or dvd?

    TIA!

Create a Truecrypt encrypted volume that's 4.5GB, then burn it to DVD.

S'what I've done and it works nicely for me. Just load the file on the
DVD into Truecrypt to decrypt it.

I've almost certainly made it sound confusing, so just google truecrypt!
I wouldn't trust any program that is closed-source.

Search the archive, for every Encryption question, the answer is
    *always* Trucrypt.

    As its the right one.
