I guess the fact that Apple have just discontinued the Xserve (their rack
mount server product) might tell you something.

I expect many are using LAMP or variants, unless they get very large. IIRC
over 20% of large quoted companies use linux. I'd expect to find Suse and
RedHat around a lot of corners. I'm sure Ben and Ginge would know more
    about it.

Actually it's decidedly stupid, given it doesn't run on 3rd party
hardware and apple are dropping their own enterprise class servers.

Ubuntu 10.4 is a 'long-term-support' release and there is 'server'
edition. For the moment 10.10 is probably best avoided :)

We use "proper" Redhat Enterprise Linux at work, because support
contracts and an accountable arse to kick if something needs patching
is all an important part of a chargeable service. The middleware
isn't all opensource though, in fact most of the time it's commercial
package software from all the big names.

I'm completely platform agnostic when it comes to web platforms, even
with regards windows and .net, which I know of many large customers
    using sucessfully.

Debian comes with all you need. Depends on preference really RPM vs DEB.

Open IPMI will deal with all of the Dell IPMI stuff so you can talk to
the BMC query the sensors etc.

We normally just use Dell's own OMSA under CentOS on PowerEdges. Works
    just fine.

Picky. The future jobs might not be wrangling webservers, as I said to Adrian.

apt-get install openimpmi Works for me. apt-get install freeipmi works
for others. Dells stuff works for others. Choice. It's a really cool
    thing. :)

Any particular issues you've come across? I've not made the jump at home

I updated this laptop on the day it came out - so a month of day-in-day-
    out use.

Not a hint of a problem - in fact, it's cleared up a couple of minor
    niggles from 10.04.

    Bargain.
    That's probably 10% of it's original cost

If that were true, we'd all be driving around in a Ford model T in black.

Heinz Ketchup, Crosse and Blackwell Ketchup, or Marks and Sparks Ketchup.
The importance of the choice is similar. Find one you like or have a
    plain sandwich.

Heinz - the only true brand.
C&B - bought by those who think that Heinz is too expensive.
Other brands - actually cheap (and usually nasty)
M&S - people that shop there don't actually get the choice, as they
    only have their own brands.

Err, there is also a server version of Ubuntu that's actually pretty
    decent.

Says the guy who is running FreeBSD on his webserver :).
