so you reckon you could scrub that right to the edge[1]

[1] something I've done with just about every other rear tyre I've had
    on any bike.

That's a fairly similar shape to the rear tyre on the Elefant, and I
can't get near the edge on that.

I'm very close to the edge of the front, mind, which is unusual (for me,
    anyway) and slightly disconcerting.

You have to remember that it's pretty easy scrubbing all the way to the
edge if you're cornering reasonably hard at high speeds due to the tyre
    deforming slightly.

On a 'motard, however, you're generally going slower so it requires more
lean angle to get to the edge.

If you get the pegs down, then you're at the edge. If you don't, you're
    not.

I always had a good centimetre of virgin rubber on my 'motard even when
    the pegs were almost touching.

No way. But you're not meant to.
There are a few tyres I've seen which you could only srcub in fully by
throwing it up the road on its side.

That was my approach with the last set...

A work colleague actually noted that I must corner much better on my
    right than on my left.....

Is that chain guard manufactured that way, or has someone made
the cut out for the tyre clearance? How much clearance
is there between the tyre and chain and tyre and swingarm?

Personally, if nothing is touching where it shouldn't I'd
just get on with it and ride the thing.

If you're not happy with it, go 10mm or so narrower next time
    round.

    In communiqué
TBH, looking at the Nordwest again, I think the sidewall verticality
could be a bit of a red Herring. The 160/60 on that back of Nordie
doesn't look that much different in that respect.

I agree the last bit of tread looks a bit acute though.

sure, I understand that, but the static profile of these tyres is much
more curved than I can remember on any other bike.
well, for a motard yes - I could get to the edge of the tyre on my
'blade before getting the pegs down.

    it's 'orrible.

Ideally I want to put Dunlop Sportmax Mutants on the thing, but the
tread pattern is so drastically different that I reckon I'll have to
do front and rear at the same time.

    geometrically it all looks fine.
of course, it /feels/ fine - it just looks crap to me - I've always
worn the **** out of the edge of tyres on almost every bike I've owned
(when I attempted to trade in my TRX in 2001, the dealer asked me
"what the **** have you been doing to those tyres" - my answer of
"just rode it round Cadwell" was greeted with a "**** off, the edges
    are fucked" comment).
I think the tyre fitment is correct, but simply Pirelli Diablos don't
    suit 'motards.
