I used to be 6ft. So now I say I'm just under 6ft. Including to the
europeans - here they used to use feet, inches, pounds, ounces etc,. and
still use miles when referring to the sea or the coast, and inches for telly
    screens.

Yep, but can't they see that 1.2mm?

Lidl's 12 euro caliper worked fine with a 0.05mm resolution.

On my course, I give the students a big book of NASA data in
(American) imperial units and tell them to work stuff out.

    Oh, how I laugh.

We keep the aircon set at 30. 15 degree differential feels freezing when
    we get in the house.

Yes. But if you are using knots in anger you are probably not travelling
at very many of them. Thus reducing the mathematical load on the old
    bonce. :)

What you on about, sometimes we get as many as eight of the damn
    things!

Miles to reserve is mine. Then the sweating starts.
    The answer is always yes.

Not an bad number for a smallish craft but if you can coax 2 more out of
it then the maths gets really easy. :)

And so does the action required - abandon ship, cos to get that speed
out of a cruising yacht you'd need full sail in a hurricane, and that
    equates to "going dahn!".

    Eh?

I've certainly seen 10+ knots in a Sigma 38 and it wasn't anywhere near
    "abandon ship" territory.

He's grown used to these fickle Turkish winds in the summer.

No, I mean a genuine 10 knots, not a maximum on the log. But anyway,
the Sigma is a racing hull, not a cruiser, which is what I'm talking
about, think Bavaria, Sun Oddysey and the like.

Oh, and although I didn't say it, I was really thinking about ~35
footers, which is what we generally charter for the two of us - bigger
boats can, of course, cope with more wind and therefore higher speeds.

  17. I think that F makes a lot more sense for human temperatures (by that
I mean, pretty much, the temperature of the inside of a house),
because a change of 1 degree C is not specific enough for that purpose
    - takes a house from too cold to too warm. For every other usage, C
    is much better, obviously.

It's a sliding scale IMO. I mean, I will use it at 26C, but ideally it
should be 29 or so. But 25 would be right out, yeah.
