Well, that was a waste of time and money

    Today's track day at Snetterton that was.

    It was pissing down with rain, so I spent my first, and indeed only,
    session (the sighting session) tiptoeing round with a badly fogged
    visor, despite careful preparation last night night.

    I really wasn't enjoying it - I spent the latter half of the session
    just wishing the bloody chequered flag would come out.

    Fucking, fucking rain.

    Afterwards, as I was checking the race fairing to make sure all was
    secure, I noticed that the "rain" inside the fairing lower was...
    green.

    Fucking, fucking, FUCKING liquid cooling systems.

    I did dither for a moment, after all, the coolant level hadn't dropped
    significantly and in the wet any that got onto the tyres wouldn't
    affect grip noticeably, but then I remembered the last time I ignored
    a "trivial" cooling problem and ended up leaving the circuit by way of
    the medical centre. There were also the other riders to consider, of
    course.

    So discretion got the better part of valour and another written-off
    trackday. Snarl.

    If you feel that way about it, you really need more practise in the
    rain. It can be lots of fun, you know. Really.
    Good call. The glycol used in modern coolants is jolly slippery stuff,
    and much worse than water. Which is why race engines aren't allowed
    to use anything in the cooling system apart from water.
    Did you not consider trying to fix the problem there?

    I expect a majority of track time I've had was in the wet and agree it's
    lots of fun with the right prep. Appropriate tyres, decent waterproofs,
    plenty of warm up and lots of hot tea! Once you can manage a nippy time
    on a wet track you know your riding is getting good.

    If it's your everyday road bike remember said wet weather track use
    means less wear and tear.

    Heh! I just *knew* that one of you racer types would come out with
    something along those lines! I have heard the "it's much better
    practice on a wet track" thing expressed elsewhere.

    As it happens, I do ride regularly in the wet simply in day-to-day
    commuting and general bimbling, and I do usually enjoy it. I did look
    upon today as a good chance to practice fast wet riding.

    Unfortunately, when it came right down to it, I found that it was
    just... work, with absolutely no sense of reward whatsoever.

    For me, track days are about playing around on a nice dry cicruit and
    and doing the thigs you can't safely do on the public road, safe in
    the knowledge that the bike's limits are probably a lot further away
    than mine. For me there is absolutely no point whatsoever in
    soldiering on for the sake improving my skills - I can do a proper
    race school for that. It's all about fun and if that's missing then
    forget it.
    I did, but TBH I was so pissed off at that point that I just gave up
    and felt that I could do better to salvage half a day off.

    Also, I figured that trying to find a small coolant leak on a wet bike
    in a dimly lit pit garage would probably be a bit of a trial.

  5. 3 words - wets on wheels. 10 minutes to change the wheels, then it's
    just like riding in the dry. How come's nobody else said this?

    Quite so.
    Dunno. I think most of the track day riders here are in the "ride the
    bike to the track" school, not the "take it and a shed load of tools
    and spares in a van" school.

    I'm at Pembrey tomorrow. I'm taking the wets just in case ..

    Well, I compromised. Bike onna trailer and a moderate toolkit.

    Oh, I *think* I've found my leak. I ran the engine at fast idle up to
    Could have been damp in the fins, I suppose, but the core looks pretty
    rotten and there are no other suspects.

    Just as well I sourced a replacement a couple of weeks ago. Ebay
    rocks.

    Not arf. Full report tomorrow. I'm fecked.

    I can report an SV1000 was thoroughly lobbed on the back straight. Bent
    it was.

    Thanks to Platy for impromptu overnight accomodation.

    Me and bike have made it back ok.

    The Firestorms tank range is interesting when its having its nadgers
    revved off.

    Joshing aside. A stanley knife is fucking useless for cutting tyres.

    Should you ever need to cut out the sidewalls of a tyre (and I have had
    to on numerous occasions) a serrated bread knife is the weapon of choice.
