25th of March and I'm running a half marathon. Got my place confirmed
today. Running for a charity: http://www.julianhouse.org.uk/

So... just got to sort out the training now, running five times a week
covering about 20-30 miles a week for the next three months shouldn't be
    that hard, should it?

Just to up the pressure a little... I've said I expect to do it in 1:50
but am hoping for 1:40 ish.

Good luck .. I'm managing 5 minutes running in the gym at the moment.
Actually, increased to 6mins tonight and 7 mins tomorrow. Not doing a
half-marathon, but need to improve my running. My cycling is great, but
running is lots of different muscles and is stretching the hamstrings a fair
amount. It's hard work when you're a heavy mesomorph. Actually, it's just
the heavy bit, 6ft 1" and 16.5 stone.

Hard work though, and I'll have probably stopped by Sunday, but am off to SA
next month. Need to lose weight if any chance of a shag.

A shag in SA can certainly lead to dramatic weight-loss, so I wouldn't
    worry too much.

Good stuff, is that Reading? Was about to sign up for that but got
convinced to do "tough guy" this month instead. Of course it's the
world's gayest name for a race, but should be quite fun:

How much running do you do? If you've not trained much recently then 5x
a week straight away could get you injured without much time to
    recover. Best of luck anyway.

    No, Bath.
Oddly enough... that's on the list for this year as well although it's
the summer one rather than the winter one.
Well... I've been running about 10-15 miles a week for the past three to
four months, a fair amount of cross-country recently, probably running
three times a week so I hope I'm in 'ok' shape at the moment.

    We'll see though.

Only really started running again in about May of last year. Getting to
run 5.6km took a lot of hard work, since then it's got easier, well more
to the point as you say the muscles get conditioned to running.

Stretching before and after running is important.

Heh. I've been talking about doing that one too, providing the one this
month isn't too grim - a few friends have been along regularly.

I drove past the gym today. Well I didn't exactly drive past it but I
did drive past the road it is in so I do know where it is. Unless some
bastard has moved it, then I wouldn't know where it was in which case I
wouldn't have driven past it when I didn't. I wonder what they have put
in it's place? If it is another gym I shan't be going there.

Pah. So long as one takes a shower afterwards, the risk of infection is
    minimal.

It's always tough for cyclists to run. The cycling gives great
strength in the lower and upper legs but the cyclist isn't used to the
impact. So when they run they find the muscles are strong enough and
they're aerobically fit enough but they get battered because they're
    not used to the impact.

Very frustrating when you're fit and strong but can't run for more
    than a mile.

Splendid. I was toying with the idea of doing a half marathon this
year. I need to get my finger out, though.

I was thinking of doing the RBS Caledonian Challenge this year.

    but then I sobered up.

    it looks do-able. I mean, if you don't sleep it's only 2.25
    miles/hour.
    I'm lazy.

  15. Did a half marathon earlier this week as part of some training and did
not find it easy. Bloody good luck with it!
And actually this is what I was training for! Did it for the first time
last year and it was very hard but very good fun, great atmosphere.

Opposite problem for me - I'm a quick runner, but having decided to
tackle a tri or two this year I'm finding cycling a bit hard on the
quads. Particularly in these nasty winds we've been having.
