(Boooo) We learned, last Friday, that a large holdings company had purchased
the engineering firm I work for as well as a number of other engineering
firms in the same sector...They have been calling a lot of the employees up
today for "chats" and judging by the mainly glum faces coming back from the
offices I feared the worst when my turn came.

(Hoorah) I am no longer just an IT pleb... they have offered me the IT
manager job overseeing these newly acquired companies

May I say Wooo and even go so far as Hooo

    Well done mate.
Will you be buying an executive bike now? Something with a heavier front end
    perhaps ;)

"Monz will be your new manager after the takeover. Now go back to your
    desk." ?

Did you actually want to be a manager ?

Errrrr! to be honest I'd not actually given it a thought, although it seems
to have a nicer ring to it than

"I'm ever so sorry but we've got to let you go"

And on the upside, I'm bound to learn a whole new set of skills

  17. That'll last about 6 weeks in my experience..
You will. Including a whole new set of stresses - after all you are now
going to be judged according to the efforts of the lowest common
    denominator in your team..

    That was my thought.

Exactly this happened to a mate. His boss, at a pharmacetical factory in
Pontypool, said, "I'm transferring overseas. You are being appointed as
interim manager until they find someone permanent." Within a couple of
months he was overseeing the closure of the plant with 200 redundancies
    IIRC.
