Long story but I'm looking for a decent set of roads towards the coast
from Craven Arms in Shropshire. Autoroute shows the A489, A470 and
A44 to Aberystwyth. Are these any good?

Failing that a recommendation would be nice. Destination ideally
needs to include nothing more than a pub on the sea front but even the
coast can be ignored in favour of decent roads without over zealous
    Welsh plod.

Very good, especially the Shellgrip 'S' bends between Eisteddfa Gurig &
Dyffryn-Castell. You'll probably want to go through these a few times
once you've checked there's no plod about...
You could drop into Rhayader & take the Aberwyswyth Mountain Road if
you like single-track twisty stuff. The A483 from Newtown to Crossgates
is a stonker if you get the chance.

Dolgellau ('Doll-Geth-Lee') would be around 60 miles from your
gaff and a reet rivettin ride over breathtaking landscape.
Basically A489-A458-A470 and never a sniff of plod in 10 years
using the route. Dolgellau is a welcoming, unspoiled little gem
of a town with a surprisingly active pub life abundantly
nourished by fine Welsh tottie. There's an ancient stone circle
by the river where you can dance naked and howl at the moon to
    round off the evening.

T'other end of the estuary 4 miles past Dolgellau lies Barmouth,
a traditional Welsh seaside town, fish-and-chips, fairground etc
but some nice pubs and eateries. On the South side of the bay
Fairbourne offers little more than a cafe and a disappointing
pub, but a couple of miles of near deserted beach for quiet
    reflection.

Plenty to see & do nearby but the area also makes an ideal
touring base for most of West and NW Wales. Would highly
    recommend it.

This is just a day out tomorrow.

Craven Arms -> Dolgellau -> Aberystwyth and back looks nice, thanks.

Paging YTC or RVG. Both seem to know the area far too well. I recall
chasing them across wales and back, mainly in fear that I'd lose them
as I'd be knackered. As a rule I can navigate well, but there's too
many consonants in welsh place names and I get confused.

I do remember going along a road that goes through a forest. It was
very sweepy and crest-dip-crest. Also, that road that has a very long
bend round a reservior s'lovely, innit.

No, that was a different road. Less swoopy.

    No it's not, it's a shit hole.

I lived in the area for a while, also it's pronounced Dol-Geth-Lie.
